Welcome the Stranger. Protect the Refugee.

Über uns

There have never been more people seeking safety and so few places willing to protect and welcome them. More than 114 million people are fleeing persecution. Governments should be taking responsibility to support them, but instead, their responses are unacceptable. Founded more than 120 years ago, HIAS is there for refugees when and where they need help most. We are a Jewish humanitarian organization that works in the United States and 20+ other countries, providing vital services to refugees and asylum seekers of all faiths so they can rebuild their lives. With the Jewish community beside us, we also advocate for the rights of forcibly displaced people globally. Over our expansive history, we’ve confronted—and overcome—formidable challenges facing refugees. Today, we are a leader with the expertise, partnerships, and values necessary to respond to the global crisis. Refugees deserve a world in which they find welcome, safety, and opportunity. With you, we can create it. Learn more and take action at HIAS.org.

HIAS has been there for refugees when and where they need help most. We provide vital services to refugees and asylum seekers in over 20 countries, and we advocate for their fundamental rights so they can rebuild their lives. We can't turn our backs as communities flee war zones, persecution, and violence. Especially as we find ourselves living in a moment when anti-immigrant rhetoric and xenophobia are reaching an all-time high, we come together today and prove that we are on the right side of history. During the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan that concluded in late August of 2021, over 76,000 Afghans, many of whom had worked closely with the American government, were evacuated to the United States. But thousands more unable to escape at the time have faced arduous journeys attempting to reach the U.S. — and to obtain legal status once they arrived. Three years later, we’re continuing to provide extensive resettlement support and legal assistance to hundreds of Afghan asylum seekers struggling to find safety and stability in the U.S. Read more: https://bit.ly/3AQNOg0

Today marks 500 days of war in Sudan. Despite causing the world’s biggest displacement crisis, media attention is lacking. The humanitarian response is dangerously underfunded. Aid continued to be difficult to distribute. Let us repeat: We won't let the world forget about Sudan. Share this post to help keep #EyesOnSudan

Today marks seven years since the Burmese military launched a wave of attacks against the Rohingya people, sparking a genocide and forcing more than 700,000 people to flee to neighboring Bangladesh. The Rohingya continue to face grave challenges. Rohingya civilians are being targeted with horrific violence, and thousands have been displaced without adequate food, water, shelter or health care. Last month, Rep. Gregory Meeks, Ranking Member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, introduced the Rohingya Genocide Accountability and Protection Act (H.R. 8936) along with Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Micheal McCaul. The bill was then swiftly approved by the full committee with bipartisan support. We CANNOT ignore the atrocities continuing to unfold against the Rohingya people. We call on the U.S. government to do all it can to bring a swift end to the war in Burma, restore democracy and pressure the military and the Arakan Army to treat the Rohingya as citizens with equal human rights. The Biden administration needs to continue welcoming refugees into the U.S. Along with Refugee Council USA (RCUSA), we're asking the administration to commit resources to four key areas: 👉 Doubling the Reception & Placement Direct Assistance and Administrative Per Capita funding. 👉 Improving access to safe, affordable, and sustainable housing for refugees and newcomers. 👉 Strengthening coordination between agencies, including building capacity, improving access to health clinics, and processing of employment authorization and Social Security enrollment. 👉 Investing in refugee processing improvements and program innovations, while upholding principles of equity, additionality, and high standards of care. Let’s honor the U.S.'s legacy as a country of refuge and welcome people seeking safety: https://bit.ly/3AKYtsz

Got books? We do! Staff from our corporate partner Ipsos North America recently organized a book drive and donated over 75 books to refugees and asylum-seekers in the DC area. Employees donated books in diverse languages — from English to Spanish to Dari — and included thoughtful messages of support and welcome. Just one book can be a critical tool to learn, develop skills, and grow creatively. Thank you, Ipsos for your continued support! Reena Roy Tuljaram Deema Abdo

"It's really comforting for us as a family to help people." Since 2018, HIAS has collaborated with Airbnb.org, and its predecessor program, Airbnb Open Homes, to provide emergency accommodation to refugees, asylum seekers and other people in need of a welcoming place to stay. In the last six years, the program has supported close to 60,000 people in Guatemala, the U.S., Ecuador, Poland, Colombia, Peru, and Guyana. In Guatemala, HIAS works with carefully selected hosts to make sure that participants are protected, comfortable and settled into their place. For Airbnb superhost Jorge* and his family, providing his apartment to people in need has brought unexpected benefits to their lives. “We want to help them, and we want them to forget about everything that they’ve gone through for a while. I want my children to grow up and learn about the importance of helping others. They accompany my wife and I in this entire process.” From the beginning of the program until May 2024, 136 people across Guatemala received emergency accommodation thanks to the partnership. https://lnkd.in/g8FtXgnW
