NEW Report by Hope Border Institute, Human Rights First, Immigrant Defenders Law Center, Kino Border Initiative, RAICES, and Refugees International finds that following June’s asylum ban, immigration officers are systematically & illegally deporting ppl who express fear of return & denying others an opportunity to speak. https://lnkd.in/eNZ95Y9c The June asylum ban removed a ~30-year-old safeguard requiring officers to ask if those processed for summary deportation fear return, a crucial step for compliance with U.S. law mandating asylum screenings for those who express fear. Since the safeguard was eliminated , those deported w/out an asylum screening include survivors of gender-based violence, ppl whose family members were assassinated, LGBTQI+ ppl, individuals with visible injuries from attacks & ppl fleeing death threats & harms with children. Instead of referring people for asylum screenings as required by law, CBP is summarily deporting them to harm, telling people fleeing unimaginable horrors, many of whom are seeking safety with young children.
