Since April of this year a total of 329 police officers have been trained through 12 training sessions by the Human Trafficking Institute in Belize! The enthusiasm and dedication displayed by the attendees reflect a powerful commitment to combating human trafficking in our communities. Last month, Human Trafficking Institute had the privilege of hosting a Trafficking in Persons (TIP) training for 36 dedicated investigators from the South Africa Police Service (SAPS). The overwhelming feedback? They wanted more time to dive deeper into critical strategies to stop human trafficking! Exciting News! In 2023, the Human Trafficking Institute successfully launched its enforcement model in the Republic of South Africa. As part of the pre-launch phase, HTI formed a crucial partnership with the National Prosecution Authority, outlining key steps to enhance the prosecution of traffickers. With an initial focus on the Western Cape, our dedicated team has begun critical assessments and engagements with key stakeholders to strengthen anti-trafficking efforts. HTI creates upstream solutions with outsized impact. Many anti trafficking efforts focus on awareness or caring for survivors. These are essential, but if we don’t invest in stopping traffickers, then they exploit more victims who need more care. By stopping traffickers, we not only free current victims, but prevent countless others from ever experiencing the horrors of trafficking in the first place. We do this through effective law enforcement. Many traffickers are only willing to engage in their crime if there is no meaningful cost in doing so. But when law enforcement teams impose serious costs on traffickers, seizing profits and sending them to jail, trafficking begins to collapse as traffickers decide the risk isn’t worth it. On June 26th, a trafficker was sentenced to 311 months in prison for human trafficking crimes in the Federal District of New Jersey. The Human Trafficking Institute dedicated several weeks to providing crucial research and data that contributed to securing this lengthy sentence after trial. We commend Assistant U.S. Attorneys Bruce Keller and Joseph Minish, along with the entire United States Attorney's Office for New Jersey, for their steadfast commitment to combating human trafficking and protecting victims from exploitation. Victims of sex trafficking can face exploitation for as little as one day, but also as long as several years. In 2023, sex trafficking victims spent an average of 12 months in exploitation at the hands of their trafficker. The longest length of exploitation in 2023 was 300 months. Understanding exploitation victims face is incredibly insightful to shaping interventions for victims and care for survivors. There is a false sense of understanding in which many believe most traffickers kidnap their victims into a trafficking scheme. This is a myth. The FHTR consistently shows that victims of human trafficking are rarely kidnapped and forced into a trafficking scheme, but rather know their trafficker. Data shows that between 2019 and 2023, 17 of the 3,782 victims in federal human trafficking cases were kidnapped by their trafficker. This is less than 1% of victims over the last five years.
