  • It has been two years since Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi established a continuous IAEA presence at the Zaporizhzhya Nuclear Power Plant. This week, he traveled to Ukraine and yesterday, together with IAEA experts, assessed the situation at the ZNPP following the August 11 cooling tower fire and ongoing work on water pumps and fuel storage. “As I conduct my fifth visit to the ZNPP, and my tenth to Ukraine since the beginning of the conflict, I want to reassure the international community that the IAEA, and I as Director General, will continue to do everything possible within our mandate to assist in averting a nuclear or radiological accident at any of Ukraine’s nuclear facilities,” Director General Grossi said.

  • The IAEA is joining forces with FAO and World Health Organization to help update global human energy requirements—last assessed in 2001. With nuclear science, we aim to fill knowledge gaps in nutrition data, supporting efforts to combat hunger and malnutrition worldwide. This effort will guide policy and interventions, bringing us closer to achieving the Sustainable Development Goal on Zero Hunger. atoms.iaea.org/479TFsX

  • Diversity and inclusion strengthen nuclear security. The IAEA is committed to closing the gender gap and empowering young professionals through initiatives such as the Women in Nuclear Security Initiative and the Nuclear Security Delegation for the Future. Since 2019, we have increased the number of women in the professional and higher categories at the IAEA from 30% to nearly 46%. Our programmes, including the IAEA Marie Skłodowska-Curie Fellowship and the Lise Meitner Programme, help women and young professionals build the skills needed to contribute to a secure future for nuclear science and technology. https://lnkd.in/d2DDgq2F

  • Mozambique is experiencing a high burden of infectious disease and a growing burden of non-communicable diseases including cancer. To address this challenge, the IAEA, World Health Organization, MD Anderson Cancer Center and the IARC - International Agency for Research on Cancer / World Health Organization reviewed the country’s existing National Cancer Control Programme, with a focus on cancers affecting women and children. The team of experts made recommendations to Mozambique's Ministry of Health, including the need to further integrate and coordinate #CancerCare4All services with HIV-AIDS, child and maternal health and primary care programmes, and optimize current diagnostic and treatment capacity among others. “For many years, we have been collaborating with Mozambican leaders and providers in advancing cancer care, and this impact review process is a critical step in our mission to eliminate cancer. Every insight we gain and every initiative that is implemented has the potential to elevate patient outcomes and reshape cancer care on a global scale,” said Toma Omofoye, Director of Breast Imaging Global Oncology Program at MD Anderson Cancer Center, an IAEA Collaborating Centre.
