I rarely give actionable advice on what people should do with their lives. Whether it be stocks, bitcoin, real estate, etc. If it goes well, they don’t give me any of the profit. And if it goes poorly, they want their money back. But this piece of advice is failsafe. Guaranteed to improve your life today. You’ll move easier in society, amongst your co-workers. You’ll be considered more likable and maybe even better looking! Here it is: Treat Politics as Religion. When sometimes gives you a political opinion, Imagine they just told what religion they practice. In that case, you’d never say, “OMG, how could anyone believe that; I can’t respect their view on anything else.” Instead, you’d say, “Oh well; It’s his religion,” and move on to the next subject. You can still vote your own way, and advocate for your own beliefs. But your opinion of that other person will be better; and your life will improve as a result.

I posted a video last week relating to “Open to Work” candidates, and received a couple of messages asking if it’s still a good idea to use this. On this issue, there are basically two questions to ask. Will this cause problems at your current workplace? And second, will Recruiters and Companies think less of you if you are “Open to Work?” To the first question, if you are unemployed and need a job quickly, it’s a non-sequitur; use the banner. If you’re happy in your current position, but just want to know what is out there. It may not be the best idea. First, understand that there are 2 ways to declare yourself “Open to Work.” You can set your privacy status so everyone can see it, or so that only those with a LinkedIn Recruiter License can see it. The latter is preferable in the case that you are employed and don’t want anyone to know that you are looking. But understand, it’s always possible for people to find out. Rule of life: Never put anything on the internet unless you would be OK with seeing that on the jumbotron next to your name and photo. On the other hand, if you do set it so that only people with a Linkedin Recruiter License can see it, I’m not sure how much traction you’d lose from other recruiters searching who do not have a license. Additionally, there is another option for you. When we do searches for candidates at iLocatum, we always first look at candidates who are “Open to Work” along with candidates who are classified by Linkedin as “Active Talent.” “Active Talent” includes Candidates who have shared a Profile Update or Public Resume recently on Linkedin. Updating your resume or profile, as a proxy for Open to Work is a hack you can use to covertly come up in searches as well. I’ve been seeing about 25% as many candidates who are “Active Talent” as “Open to Work.” Now to the second question, does being “Open to Work” cause some to think less of you, and possibly overlook you. For me personally, it does not. I will say that “Open To Work” resumes often show shorter tenures. That said, not all do, and I’m still looking through them to find resumes that are BOTH “Open to Work” AND have good tenures. It involves a bit more work, but great resumes are still found. What do you think? Should Candidates use it, and what do Recruiters and Hiring Managers think of those who do?

Be careful out there. In the jobs market a big downward revision is expected Wednesday from the Bureau of Labor Statistics in jobs created in the last year. In the Automotive market, here's an anecdotal view of what I'm seeing more of. $30k upside down! During the GFC in 2009, to reinvigorate the economy, the government introduced Cash for Clunkers, where people were happy to receive up to $4,200 for their clunker, which was often worth $2,000. Then they would might buy a $9,000 car. How's that gonna work this time?

Placement #36 of 2024 This was for a Director of Clinical Services in Dallas at $125k. This was 2 months start to finish. Dallas is a hot growing market, and healthcare is proving robust during the current economic situation as well. I expect this job market to remain stronger than many others (although the Dallas real estate market may have a bumpy road ahead). The candidate was strong; had fantastic tenures, especially for healthcare where job hopping is a bit more common and often overlooked because of the talent shortage issue. So clients get excited to see the rare back to back 5+ year stints. Placement #37 of 2024 This was for an Inventory Planner in Ohio at $65k. This was fairly quick from apply to hire, less than 2 weeks start to finish. Candidate had a Bachelor’s, very early in career, with experience with a global fulfillment company with extensive inventory management and forecasting experience.
