When colleges use algorithms to predict student success, these models influence decisions about recruitment, admissions, and which students receive additional resources. A new report reveals these algorithms may be biased against Black and Latinx students. In light of these findings, how can higher education embrace this technology while promoting equitable outcomes for students? Data literacy, racial consciousness, and transparency can help, according to one of the report’s authors and IHEP Board Member Dr. Denisa Gandara from the The University of Texas at Austin. Read our Q&A with Dr. Gándara to learn how these tools can be used to promote more equitable outcomes ➡ https://lnkd.in/guMkgGM7 #PredictiveAlgorithms #HigherEd #StudentSuccess

Meet Sandra Barone – her team at Trellis Strategies analyzed the connection between students' financial well-being during college and future economic returns. Using data from the Equitable Value Explorer, this research revealed that a ten-percentage-point decrease in the number of students experiencing financial instability during college was correlated with higher economic returns, especially at four-year public schools. Hear from Sandra and other field-based researchers at our upcoming our webinar ➡ https://lnkd.in/gbN-cVaz #Webinar #HigherEd #StudentOutcomes

Native children are significantly less likely to have access to the internet in their homes. This digital divide creates barriers to collecting accurate data on Native students. For example, many colleges require students to upload Tribal enrollment documentation digitally, presenting challenges for students without internet access. Learn how researchers and policymakers can improve data collection for American Indian and Alaska Native students in higher education: https://lnkd.in/eYHKp_HK #HigherEd #NativeStudents #DigitalDivide

Meet Angela Boatman – she co-authored a Boston College report on rural-serving institutions’ (RSI) earnings outcomes, compared to their urban and suburban counterparts. The analysis reveals that while median earnings are slightly lower for students attending a #RSI, these institutions also tend to be more affordable. After factoring in college costs, the majority provide students with a minimum economic return.
