  • Join Us on Tuesday, Sept. 9 at 4 pm ET: Current Controversies in Critical Care Webinar! The field of critical care medicine continues to evolve, with new evidence constantly challenging the existing beliefs. While analgesia-first sedation strategy avoids the use of sedative drugs, the use of #opioids to achieve this may lead to acute withdrawal in the short term and persistent opioid use in the long term. Similarly, the timing and choice of vasopressor administration in patients with septic shock remains unclear despite extensive #research, and whether renin as a biomarker should replace lactate in #sepsis treatment is being argued. Post-intensive care syndrome (#PICS) continues to challenge critical care providers, and the role of PICS clinics in improving outcomes is unclear. In such a scenario, this webinar will discuss some of the current controversies in critical care that challenge conventional thinking and will present evidence to help answer some of these questions. Moderator: Brigid Flynn, MD, FCCM, Professor, Department of Anesthesiology, Chief, Division of Critical Care, Director, Cardiothoracic ICU, Director, ECMO Services TUKHS, Chair, Anesthesia Research Committee, Pro/Con Section Editor, JCVA, University of Kansas Health System, Kansas City, KS Presenters: Is Analgesia-Based Sedation Always the Right Choice? Kunal Karamchandani, MD, FCCP, FCCM, Associate Professor, University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, Dallas, TX Biomarkers in Septic Shock: Is Renin the New Lactate? Ashish Khanna, MD, MS, FCCP, FCCM, FASA, Professor of Anesthesiology and Vice-Chair of Research, Department of Anesthesiology, Section on Critical Care Medicine, Wake Forest University School of Medicine in Winston-Salem, NC Recovery after Critical Illness: Are PICS Clinics Effective? • Join Us Today at 4 pm ET: The Crossroads of #Hematology and Intensive Care Medicine Webinar! In the face of blood shortages, ICU doctors are adopting innovative strategies like targeted #coagulopathy management for complex patients, carefully weighing each thrombotic risk. #DOAC reversal is a technique gaining momentum worldwide, necessitating a deep understanding of its mechanisms for devising effective policies, enhancing patient care, and formulating strategies for treatment failure. The global rise in the use of #ECMO and mechanical circulatory support due to COVID and chronic heart failure presents us with a unique set of challenges. In this webinar, you will explore and understand the intersections of #anticoagulation, #bleeding and #thrombosis, paving the way for better patient outcomes and healthcare approaches. • Have you read the August 2024 Bulletin yet? Bulletin: Plasma Transfusion - Risks, Benefits and Outcomes This month's featured article examines the question of whether #plasma transfusions in addition to red cell transfusions increase risk of #VTE compared to red cell transfusions in surgical patients. There may be immunological and non-immunological mechanisms for why #perioperative plasma transfusions may be associated with higher VTE events. The cover art shows the risks/benefits of plasma transfusions. Learn more: https://ow.ly/hKrw50SKz2b
