Irena has a loving and devoted son who lives a few towns away. Unfortunately, his visits to his mother, who is aging and wheelchair bound, have become much more infrequent, as he’s dealing with health issues of his own. A JSSA Transitions program volunteer visits Irena weekly. Their observations are shared with her son so he can stay as involved as possible in ensuring her wellbeing as she navigates a life-limiting illness. Our Transitions program was designed to support women like Irena and their families. Can this service benefit a loved one in your life? https://lnkd.in/ewGUdZR9

JSSA is a trusted health and social wellness agency serving the National Capital Region. We help neighbors and their families through their most vulnerable moments with warmth and acceptance. We focus on four areas of care: supporting people with mental health challenges; helping people with disabilities find meaningful jobs; caring for older adults so they can safely age at home, and offering dignity and comfort to hospice patients. That is what our neighbors need most, and we know that because we’ve been adapting to meet their changing needs for 130 years. We’ve learned that everyone needs support at some point. JSSA is always here, ready to help. Our goal is to make essential care and quality of life accessible to everyone.

NEW from the JSSA Training Institute: Earn 2 Category I Continuing Education credits at an upcoming free session designed to help mental health professionals equitably serve diverse communities. This session is made possible in partnership with JSSA’s Healthy Minds Fairfax Youth Advisory Council. A little more background … Research has shown that Hispanic, Black, and Asian populations experienced worse rates of anxiety and depression than their non-Hispanic, white counterparts during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. But, even before the events of 2020 and 2021, we know Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC)-identifying Americans received lower-quality care, while many were unable to access mental health services at all. The training will begin with a presentation to contextualize the issue and present best practices. This will be followed by a panel discussion of BIPOC transitional-age youth who will share their experiences of mental health and accessing care. The session is free and open to the public. In honor of Direct Support Professionals week, we want to make sure to recognize and celebrate our team members supporting individuals with disabilities. DSPs play a vital role in the lives of many people with disabilities in the National Capital Region. Their dedication and commitment have never been more evident than over the past few years. These essential employees are the heart and soul of the system of supports that ensures people with disabilities can live the lives of their choosing. Our dedicated staff helps individuals living with disabilities access and participate in our community through meaningful employment and with mental health support. By finding the right ways to assist each individual, we empower our neighbors to build social, emotional, and financial fulfillment and independence. Thank you for all the great work you do this week and always! https://lnkd.in/e5FCcsKX
