For #JobsDay, the Joint Center analyzes the employment numbers from the Bureau of Labor Statistics and showcases what the numbers mean for Black workers. Our August Jobs Day analysis by Joint Center Policy Analyst, Workforce Policy Bianca Dacres, MPP is below. #JobsReport ▶️ From July to August, the number of Black workers employed decreased slightly by 100,000, and the unemployment rate dropped from 6.3% to 6.1%. ▶️ In August, the unemployment rate for Black women slightly increased to 5.7% from 5.6% in July; However, for Black men, it decreased to 6.5% from 6.9% in July. ▶️ The unemployment rate for young Black workers decreased to 15.3% but slightly increased from 9.8% to 9.9% for all young workers. ▶️ Ensuring that the labor market is strong is critical for supporting Black households. At 8.5%, Black homeowners have the highest rate of late payments compared to other groups. ▶️ In July, Black renters struggled to pay their rent, as 18.8% reported not being caught up on last month’s rent payments, compared to 8.5% of white renters. In recognition of this past Labor Day, we honor the history of Black labor unions making a substantial impact in advocating for workers’ rights and advancing social justice. These and other unions have played a crucial role in advocating for workers' rights, improving working conditions, and shaping the future of labor movements.
