As an advocate of #dei in the workplace I am often asked about (a) the value of DEI in a startup (b) the journey at Kumo.AI. A diverse team simply means a team whose brains are wired differently. They think through problems differently and cover each others blind spots. An atmosphere that allows diverse creative individuals to succeed, lets you test many different hypothesis quickly - a critical element in a startup. At Kumo.AI, like any other early stage startup, we didn't have the time to employ the sourcing tactics of a large company to create a diverse team as the need to execute fast including in hiring, always dominates. However, the following seems to have worked for us: 1. A diverse founding team is a seed that attracts similarly diverse talent (for us the breadth in gender, countries of origin, work experience, life-stage (eg., new parents) was quite wide in the inital group. 2. Open source is a powerful equalizer! Our genesis in https://pyg.org/ meant we hired globally, wherever we found the best people. We hired our top contributors and others from other open source libraries. It didn't matter what school you went to or language you spoke, we found a way to make it happen. Modern PEO systems like remote.com or Rippling make hiring global workforce very easy. So how are we doing ~3 years in. For Kumo.AI we decided to use Languages spoken as a proxy for how our brains are wired. There is increasing scientific evidence (https://lnkd.in/ggeKKEaN) that shows that languages shape the brain differently and that seemed like a great proxy to capture the diversity of our team. In our 50-ish person startup, about 30 people took the survey and we found 25+ languages (someone even said C++). If you are a startup founder what has worked for you?
