Swimwear designers Laura Low Ah Kee and Shannon Savage didn’t set out to make #Olympics history when they designed the first ever one-shouldered top to be worn by beach volleyball players at the Paris games. “That came from such a pure place,” says Savage, co-founder of Left On Friday, the Vancouver-based brand that made the uniforms for #TeamCanada’s volleyball athletes—notably, gold medal-hopefuls Melissa Humana-Paredes and Brandie Wilkerson. “They were already wearing one of our one-shouldered styles in practice, and they just loved how free their serving arm was.” The tops also do double duty as sports bras, providing essential support, and there are options for left and right-handed players to ensure their hitting arm is unencumbered. The #Olympics are inherently competitive. That’s the whole point of the event, after all. But when it comes to brand representation via uniforms, there’s a new leveling of the playing field. While major brands like The North Face are front and center at this year’s games — with the U.S. outdoors brand creating climbing uniforms for the U.S., Japan, South Korea and Austria — some countries are opting to work with more regional names rather than large international conglomerates. Left On Friday, for instance, is a Canadian brand designing for a Canadian team, and Paris-based streetwear designer Stephane Ashpool is designing for the French Olympic team. Meanwhile, other countries are turning to brands within a sport’s niche because they know that the brand has the technical know-how around what athletes need.

Formerly a mere utility, beach towels have become a form of art, a timeless accessory and a means of self-expression, making a stylish statement alongside any swimsuit, especially with Left On Friday. As Grace Cook discovered in Mallorca, graphic towels offer another advantage: they’re easily spotted after a dip in the sea and double as a home comfort you can travel with.
