We Make Equal Justice Happen

About us

Since 1963, Legal Aid of Nebraska has worked to provide disadvantaged individuals with quality legal advice and representation—something that those more fortunate take for granted. Legal Aid tackles inequality and increases opportunity for low-income Nebraskans by helping clients navigate their way through a complex and often intimidating legal system. Our clients achieve positive outcomes that measurably improve the quality of their lives, help them get up and out of poverty, and increase family stability. To best accomplish this, Legal Aid targets the most pressing legal problems keeping clients in poverty: lack of good housing, jobs, and benefits; the burden of predatory and high-interest debt; and the acute absence of family stability and safety. Legal Aid attorneys provide a full range of civil legal services, from brief advice and counsel, to assistance with self-representation, to direct representation in court. This work makes justice a reality for thousands of low-income Nebraskans, and achieves outcomes that help address the causes and effects of poverty. When low-income Nebraskans have access to a lawyer to protect their rights or to enforce helpful laws, “equal justice” is more than just words, it is reality.

Today, Legal Aid of Nebraska celebrates Juneteenth. June 19th, 1865 was the day news of the Emancipation Proclamation reached enslaved individuals in Galveston, Texas. Galveston was the last U.S. city with enslaved people, having taken nearly two and a half years to reach the city after being signed by President Lincoln on January 1st, 1863. As we celebrate Juneteenth, we honor those who have been resilient in the face of injustice, and recognize the importance of continuing to work towards racial equity. Legal justice is just one of many facets in continuing the work of racial equality. On Juneteenth, and every other day, we will continue to work towards making equal justice happen. Together, we strive for a future where freedom and equality flourish for all.

Director of the Nebraska State Bar Association's Volunteer Lawyers Project

Grateful for our partnership with Legal Aid of Nebraska! All year, they’ve welcomed the Nebraska State Bar Association Volunteer Lawyers Project to have our team meetings at their Omaha office, and yesterday some of their clerks joined our team for a lunch & learn.  Clerks & interns bring so much energy and hope to our work. It was wonderful to learn more about these inspiring young professionals from Creighton University School of Law, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, University of Nebraska College of Law, University of Nebraska at Kearney, and University of Nebraska at Omaha!
