Little Otter is a pediatric mental health company that focuses on the mental health of young children and their families. Founded by world-renowned child psychiatrist (and mother of four) Dr. Helen Egger and entrepreneur Rebecca Egger, Little Otter’s mission is to bring expert care for children’s mental health to every home. Just like a pediatrician who cares for a child’s physical health, Little Otter cares for all aspects of a child’s mental health, along with their family’s mental health and wellbeing. Through proprietary assessments and quarterly mental health check-ups for each child and their family, Little Otter provides personalized, virtual care and an integrated care team to support healthy emotional development and treat emerging emotional and behavioral challenges.

The Surgeon General's new warning on parents' mental health shouldn't be a surprise. Little Otter also has some incredible research on this topic, written by Health Evolution Fellow Helen Egger MD and Alison Stoner, PhD in their white paper "Breaking the Silence: Meeting the mental health needs of young children and their families." The most enlightening part to me was that  "Children with a caregiver with poor mental health are twice as likely to have a mental health disorder and four times as likely to have poor general health compared to children with caregivers with good mental health(23). Mothers with mental health concerns use less effective parenting strategies and are less likely to develop strong, secure, healthy relationships with their children, which can negatively impact child social, emotional, and educational outcomes(2)." Helen Egger MD also shared with me some of their data on how helping part of the family with mental health improves mental health for family members who aren't even directly getting treatment. Wow. It's so deeply intuitive after you hear it, but our current system hasn't been set up to support whole families. I'm so glad to have met Helen Egger MD and Rebecca Egger through Health Evolution and to have them in our community. Their innovations including the whole-family approach care model are just what we need in health care. https://lnkd.in/gAgFR3ZN

Navigating the teenage years can be challenging for both teens and caregivers. But how do you know when typical teen moodiness crosses into something more concerning? Our Co-Founder and Chief Medical & Scientific Officer, Helen Egger MD, recently shared her insights with Parents.com in a comprehensive guide on spotting red flag behaviors in teens. Dr. Egger emphasizes that while some moodiness is normal, persistent changes in behavior, emotions, or appearance that interfere with daily life are crucial warning signs. “1 in 5 teenagers have an impairing mental health disorder," she notes. 👀 If you’ve noticed any of these signs, it’s important to trust your instincts and seek support. One in five children and adolescents has an impairing mental health disorder. Yet only 50% of kids ever receive mental health treatment — even fewer, care that makes a measurable difference. Little Otter is now available for direct booking on Navigate & Connect in certain markets, positioning it to empower adolescent patients and their families with real-time access to specialized behavioral health care. Our VP of Clinical Operations, Leza Ogren, LICSW, recently sat down with Rebecca Egger, CEO and co-founder of Little Otter, to learn more about their mission and why measurement-based care is vital to combat the family mental health crisis.
