We created Ohana to give people the freedom to live where they want when they want. Recently, this vision has started to come to life. Since March, Ohana has has helped 630 people save $1.7M in rent by subleasing. The average host on Ohana saves $5,300! We’ve heard countless stories from Ohana hosts about the internships they are now able to take, loans they are able to pay off, and trips they can now afford because of how much they are saving on rent. Hundreds of Ohana guests started telling their friends about “a much easier way to move to NYC” by booking a furnished sublet that is 10-15% less than market rent. As Ohana grew from 0 to $1.2M in monthly payments in just a month, we started meeting with investors and within a week we closed a $3M oversubscribed seed round led by Wave Capital. How we went from coding on the side of the highway to building Ohana with the help of execs from Zillow and Airbnb. In March, Jacob and I left our dream jobs at Apple and McKinsey & Company to build Ohana. My immigrant dad was ready to disown me. What happened two months later changed our lives in ways that we still can’t believe. In early April, we were driving to a new school every day, fixing bugs in the car, and taking fundraising calls at rest stops on the side of the road. It was extremely stressful, yet fun. We started by connecting interns in need of summer housing to college students with a room they don't need over the summer. We barely had a product, no funding, and no traction. All we had was a vision to make the chaos of subleasing as easy as booking an Airbnb. We applied to Neo and met with Ali on April 5th. Even though we had no progress to show yet, he saw our conviction and believed in our vision. A week later Neo accepted us, and everything changed after that. The $625k and 4-week boot camp helped us move faster and connect with other founders like us. But what we didn’t expect were the never-ending connections to industry leaders. Before the program was over, Neo had introduced us to the co-founders of Airbnb and Zillow. In a few cases, people declined to meet. That might have stopped us if we didn't have Neo. But Ali Partovi followed up personally on every intro, spoke to every VC we were pitching, and persuaded people who had initially rejected us to back us after all. After Neo’s demo day in October, we closed our $1.2M pre-seed round and we are proud to include Spencer Rascoff (Zillow co-founder) and Surabhi Gupta (Airbnb director of engineering) and Charlene Delapena (university recruiting expert) as advisors/shareholders. Building Ohana with insights from the people who shaped the largest real estate marketplaces in the world is a dream come true. This would not have been possible without Ali personally opening his network to us and insisting that legendary entrepreneurs give us a chance. Even better than last year, 2024 accelerator Neo applicants will be connected to industry leaders when they apply! Neo is sharing compelling pitches with legendary investors and tech leaders like Henry Kravis, Sheryl Sandberg, and Spencer Rascoff. Neo's accelerator was a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
