"When it comes to resumes, brag away!" Career Advice by Phil Blair There are two main reasons any employer makes a hire. Either that new employee will make the company more money, as in sales, customer service or production. Or they will save the company money, as in accounting, purchasing or engineering. So, when writing your cover letter, and especially your résumé, point out skills and experience that will make money or save money for your future employer. Even better if you do both. Don’t be subtle. Make it jump out. Remember, you’re probably competing for that job with anywhere from a handful to hundreds of other applicants who have experience and may have better skills and experience. Don’t panic. But do give this a lot of thought. If you’re in the job market or looking for something new, I hope you’ve been keeping copious notes of successful projects you’ve worked on, managed or consulted on. If you’re not sure how to add these achievements to your résumé, Adrienne Tom, a nationally known résumé adviser, urges you to keep a list of what she calls work wins. Tom suggests keeping track of those wins with what she calls a brag file, which is a great name. Don’t be afraid to fill it up. How did you make the company more successful? How did you help the company grow? How did you improve production? How did you reduce inefficiencies? How did you save money for your employer? How much? Write it down. Be sure to mention reports you’ve written and innovative ideas that your employer may have implemented that made you stand out from the crowd. Make sure you include presentations you’ve made at national or regional conferences, or positive papers you’ve written about timely topics. Don’t forget to include a mention of what you’re most proud of — your family, your smarts, your savvy, your positive attitude, your ability to work with others. Believe me, those traits will shine through in face-to-face interviews. One primary question in mind Employers weigh résumés with one primary question in mind: “How can this person help us?” They need proof to better determine if you can help ease their pain points and possess the necessary skills to perform well in the role. Proof of skill comes with results, not vague superlatives like “I’m a hard worker” or “I’m a good salesperson” or “People like working with me.” You need to add specifics, measurable ones, such as “I increased overall sales by 22 percent last year” or “I renegotiated our travel contract and saved $100,000 the first year.” A matter of identifying impacts Everyone has done great things in their work or else they’d be out of a job.
