Marine Vet's 100th Birthday: A Celebration of Service & Legacy 📍 BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (Sept. 3, 2024) The Rev. William H. Greason, a Marine Corps veteran, professional baseball player, and minister, celebrated his 100th birthday at Rickwood Field. The event was hosted by the Heart and Armor Foundation and attended by the local community, veterans, active-duty military, and featured a Marine color guard from Company E, 4th Combat Engineer Battalion, 4th Marine Division, Marine Forces Reserve. Born in Atlanta, Greason enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1943 as one of the first Black Marines to serve. He trained at Montford Point, a segregated base in North Carolina, and served with the 66th Supply Platoon, 34th Marine Depot Company, V Amphibious Corps. His unit deployed to Iwo Jima in 1945, where he witnessed the raising of the American flag on Mount Suribachi. Reflecting on his service, Greason said, "In everything you do, make sure you don’t disgrace the Corps. I wear this Marine Corps cap because I know what happened and where I’ve been." After his honorable discharge in 1948, Greason played in the Negro American Baseball League, winning a championship with the Birmingham Black Barons. He later became one of the first Black players in Major League Baseball with the St. Louis Cardinals. For the past 53 years, Greason has served as pastor of Bethel Baptist Church in Birmingham. During the celebration, retired Marine Corps Maj. Gen. J. Michael Myatt said, “I am proud to be here with you today, and honored to celebrate you, Reverend Greason.” Marines from Recruiting Station Montgomery, represented by Maj. Nicolas R. Martino, also honored Greason’s service, saying, “Reverend Greason is an exemplary Marine, embodying the values of Honor, Courage, and Commitment. His actions both during and after service exemplify how we strive to return quality citizens back to their communities. The Marines of Recruiting Station Montgomery Alabama are proud to serve our community alongside a Marine like him.” (U.S. Marine Corps Cpl. Ruben Padilla contributed to this story) 📸 Marine Cpl.
