For patients with an unruptured #brainaneurysm, new #research led by #neurosurgeon Dr. Andy Ringer can help physicians better balance the risks of clotting vs. bleeding from taking blood thinners after aneurysm repair. Dr. Ringer says patients face the double risk of a blockage that disrupts blood flow to the brain and a rupture that causes bleeding. “Our goal is to help treating physicians balance those risks and rewards with a consistent protocol, reducing unnecessary medication use,” he says. Immediately after Christel’s surgery to repair damage at the L5-S1 levels in her lumbar spine, Dr. Bryan Krueger visited her in the hospital. “He said I was a trooper to have gone through that level of pain,” Christel says. “I remember him telling me, ‘Soon, you’ll be able to do anything you did before.’” Today, she has proven the #neurosurgeon correct. The inaugural Herche Lectureship for Surgical Innovation last week featured Dr. David Okonkwo, a neurosurgeon at University of Pittsburgh Neurosurgery, discussing commercial and financial support for #spinesurgeryinnovation.
