That means we need to get readers recognizing words automatically - and making meaning as they read. When students get to the point of reading accurately and automatically, they can pay attention to the text's meaning. 📖

FLUENCY: Phrasing or Scooping? BOTH! You can help students understand what they are reading by encouraging them to read in meaningful phrases! TRY ➡️ PHRASING 📣 Give students a text marked with slashes to indicate pauses: one slash for a short pause at the end of a meaningful phrase / and two slashes for a longer pause at the end of a sentence. // SCOOPING 🍨 Draw curved lines underneath meaningful groups of words and have students “scoop them up” as they read. Learn more ⬇️ ⬇️ ⬇️ If you found this clip helpful, listen to the full episode of our podcast with Tricia and Sonia Cabell: https://lnkd.in/eFrr7cbP 🎧 1️⃣ The first turn usually starts with a teacher asking a great open -ended question. 2️⃣ The second turn is a child's turn to respond to that question. 3️⃣ The third turn is contingent on what the child said. If the child answers correctly, the teacher scaffolds up, asks a more challenging question. So add a little something, step it up a notch. Alternatively, if the child answered incorrectly or didn't quite seem to be understanding the initial question, then the teacher scaffolds down. We step it down a notch, make it easier. 4️⃣ The fourth turn goes back to the child, their turn to respond again. 5️⃣ Then you need to close out that conversation at turn five as a teacher and build on what the child said. You recast their ideas or you expand on what they said by building just a little bit more on the child's words, maybe modeling some sophisticated vocabulary or grammar. . . . . #LanguageLearning #EducationPodcast #TeachingStrategies #LanguageSkills
