Memphis Zoo scientists have achieved a world-first by successfully producing Louisiana pinesnake offspring using frozen semen and artificial insemination. This milestone highlights the power of cutting-edge science in saving endangered species.  Led by Dr. Steve Reichling, Beth Roberts, and Dr. Mark Sandfoss, the team’s innovative approach is a game-changer for reptile conservation. Thanks to cryopreserved semen and dedicated research, we’re one step closer to preserving genetic diversity and combating extinction.  A huge shoutout to Auburn University’s Dr. Tonia Schwartz and Alexis Lindsey for their role in validating this groundbreaking success. Expanding #Research and #Conservation globally 🌏 The Memphis Zoo has announced the creation of a research station focused on #Biodiversity and land conservation in Sri Lanka! As part of the Zoo’s focus on establishing six flagship conservation programs, Curator of Research, Dr. Sinlan Poo, introduced #Zoo staff to her former colleague at the National University of Singapore, Prof. Enoka Kudavidanage, a distinguished conservation #Biologist in Sri Lanka and the head of the Department of Natural Resources at Sabaragamuwa University of Sri Lanka. As part of her efforts to protect biodiversity in her home country, Prof. Kudavidanage founded the Tropical Ecosystem Research Network (“T.E.R.N.”) in Sri Lanka and first visited Memphis Zoo in the spring of 2023 to work with Dr. Felicia Knightly and the Animal Health Center staff on #Wildlife emergency rescue and treatment of injured animals. We sat down with Alex Boggs, Area Director of Huey’s Midtown, and discussed his father’s role in Memphis Zoo’s history and his incredible legacy as a beloved Memphian. Thomas Boggs played a significant role in the first Zoo Rendezvous and went on to serve Memphis Zoo throughout his life in many ways.
