Reimbursement and Regulation are the two intractable obstacles that stand in the way of solving the mental health workforce shortage. There’s lots of innovation happening in behavioral health, but we won’t see substantive change until we can get the payment and regulatory systems to catch up. At Motivo’s Behavioral Health Workforce Summit, Charles Ingoglia of the National Council for Mental Wellbeing argued that: • Increase Pay: Non-physician clinicians need to be compensated more for clinical work.  • Employment Support: Universities need to help graduates find employment and supervision.  • Licensure Portability: Credentials and licensure should be portable across state lines.  • Streamlined Paperwork: States require extensive paperwork and data gathering. There are simply not enough mental health providers to meet the current demand. As a result, organizations are competing for the same pool of providers. And provider burnout has become a very real concern. At Motivo’s Behavioral Workforce Summit, Solome Tibebu led a dynamic discussion on innovative solutions to these pressing issues. A huge thank you to Kristina Saffran (from Equip), Jessica (Schiffman) Gaulton MD, MPH (from FamilyWell Health), Stephen Smith (from NOCD), and Kwasi Kyei (from Handspring Health) for sharing their invaluable insights. – Key Takeaways – Optimize provider workload: Use technology tools, leverage pre-licensed providers and coaches, and move identification and diagnosis further upstream. Revise Payment Models: Payors need to cover non-member facing work as part of the payment structure. Retain Clinicians: Community Treatment Centers and private practices are losing clinicians to teletherapy companies who offer attractive benefits and bonus packages, an administrative support infrastructure and a peer community and culture. These organizations need to adopt similar strategies to reverse this trend.
