Troy Brunet knows what it's like to fight. After enduring six hip replacements, surgeries to both knees, replacements to both shoulders and a multi-month coma while living with HIV, he continues to join Team Memorial at the annual AIDS Walk San Francisco. “I don’t want anyone to go through what I’ve gone through,” Troy explains. Growing up a gay man in Louisiana and living with HIV since 1994, he understands the struggle many people with HIV face on a daily basis. “I would rather be up doing something and helping someone than sitting down and relaxing.” Read more about Troy's story: https://lnkd.in/g6a-hp5s Join Team Memorial on Sunday, July 21st at AIDS Walk San Francisco to take action. Healing, hope, remembrance and history about the AIDS epidemic in America.
About us
Learn more about our Change The Pattern initiative to reimagine the fight to end HIV in the South. Just one of our programs at the National AIDS Memorial to ensure that the lives of people who died from AIDS are not forgotten and the story of AIDS is known by future generations - so that never again will a community be harmed because of fear, silence, discrimination, or stigma. Today, the history and lessons of AIDS are at the core of all of the programs and work of the National AIDS Memorial. The Grove now includes thousands of names inscribed within the ten acre memorial within the Circle of Friends, Hemophilia circle, Artists portal and on boulders and benches throughout its beautiful landscape. Thousands of volunteers have given more than 225,000 hours of their time to maintain the grounds and ensure it is preserved as a living memorial. The AIDS Memorial Quilt is now under the stewardship of the National AIDS Memorial, ensuring that this powerful symbol of AIDS and activism can be used to educate people around the world about a devasting time in our nation’s history. Within each of the Quilt’s nearly 50,000 panels are sewn the names of more than 105,000 lives lost to AIDS. Each year, thousands of panels of the Quilt are displayed throughout the U.S. and world. Through unique storytelling programs, like Surviving Voices and Q&AIDS, the National AIDS Memorial both ensures that the vast, diverse stories of surviving voices from the crisis years are captured and curated and documents how people from different generations have experienced and been affected by HIV/AIDS, encouraging communication between them. Our work is also helping inspire and develop the next generation of leaders, through the Pedro Zamora Young Leaders Scholarship and Mary Bowman Arts in Activism Award. The National AIDS Memorial relies solely on funding from personal donors and corporate partners to support its mission and programs.

🚶♀️ 35 years of community with AIDS Walk San Francisco! When Barb first volunteered with AWSF in 1989, HIV stigma was rampant around her. “What do you have in common with them?” people would ask when they learned she spent countless hours fighting HIV despite not knowing anyone impacted by the virus. The stigma and fear she witnessed in response to HIV didn't stop her from supporting the cause and continuing to volunteer almost 35 years later. “It’s not over,” Barb reminds others about the AIDS crisis. With hundreds of thousands of Americans still impacted by HIV, it remains crucial for supporters like Barb to continue the fight. 🏳️🌈 Vito Russo was a film historian who chronicled #LGBTQ+ issues when no one else was. Best known for his book, “The Celluloid Closet,” Russo appeared in the 1989 Academy Award-winning documentary, “Common Threads: Stories from the Quilt,” about the life and death of his longtime partner and the quilt that Russo made for him. A year later, Russo died from AIDS-related complications. Today would have been Russo's birthday. 🗣️ Say Vito Russo's name and learn more about his story: https://lnkd.in/gDZTRjdG #SocialJustice #HealthJustice #EndHIVStigma #StopHIV #GetTested #Healthcare

🇺🇸 Today, as we celebrate our nation’s freedom, let’s also honor those who’ve bravely fought HIV/AIDS. Their resilience shows us that true liberty means living free from stigma and discrimination. However, our fight isn’t over. Many are still grappling with prejudice and inadequate healthcare. This Independence Day, we urge you to advocate for those who need their freedom - freedom from stigma, fear, and inequality. Stand with us, creating a world where all can pursue happiness. #4thofJuly #HealthEquity #NationalAIDSMemorial #FreedomForAll #AIDSAwareness #IndependenceDay #AIDSActivism

🎥 In 1990, the power of activism was on full display when Common Threads won an Academy Award. The powerful documentary highlights the human stories behind the #AIDSQuilt, bringing attention to a community that had been largely ignored. We were honored that CAFILM chose to screen Common Threads for their #PrideMonth series, inviting us and directors Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Freidman to the event. "Every television is on and tuned into The Academy Awards for Oscar night (1990)... The winner is read and it is Common Threads. I think to myself 'Finally our voice will be heard.'" - Gert McMullin

Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi reflected on memories with the #AIDSQuilt at the Library of Congress's new “Collecting Memories” exhibit. Speaker Pelosi's connection to the Quilt and the AIDS crisis is personal and longstanding. “To see our friends holding them in our arms. Formerly robust people. Just so frail. So frail. Again and again, again and again,” she said, recalling the height of the #AIDS crisis.
