Mental health challenges such as depression, anxiety or a substance use disorder can negatively impact oral health, and the reverse is also true: poor oral health can create or worsen challenges with behavioral health. The #CDAjournal article, Why Integrate Dentistry and Behavioral Health: What Every Oral Health Provider Should Know About Mental Health and Substance Use, provides an overview of oral and behavioral health and reviews disparities facing marginalized communities who lack access to care. The National Council Medical Director Institute joins the American Association for Community Psychiatry and American College of Physicians in calling for a review and revision of treatment plan documentation requirements across the nation, engaging consumers, providers and regulatory agencies in all states to promote better access to care, improved patient care experience, better quality care and compliance with mental health parity requirements. The National Council for Mental Wellbeing's Social Justice Leadership Academy (SJLA) is excited to share our September webinar for the Learning Series, "Increasing Accessibility of Mental Health Services for Unhoused Populations in Rural and Urban Communities !" Join SJLA on Wednesday, September 18, from 12 - 1 p.m. ET  to learn how organizations in rural and urban communities are making mental health services accessible to those they serve. Special guest presenters Henry Miller and Cathy Batista, LCSW will focus on supporting unhoused populations and connecting them with necessary services without judgment or stigma. Our speakers will highlight the social determinants of health that impact treatment access in rural and urban communities. We had the great honour of welcoming the team from the National Council for Mental Wellbeing (USA) to our head office in Melbourne on Tuesday, marking the start of their week in Melbourne. The National Council, led by President and CEO Chuck Ingoglia, is the world’s largest provider of Mental Health First Aid education, having trained more than 3.8 million Americans in MHFA since they adapted the program in 2007. As the US peak mental health body, the National Council is also making great strides in ensuring equitable access to quality, community-based mental health care and support, through their #CCBHC program. With a whole-of-system approach to mental health care, this program provides valuable insights for the roll out of the Australian equivalent of these programs, through our national Medicare Mental Health Centre and Victorian Mental Health and Wellbeing Local Centre programs. We’re really looking forward to the Members and Leaders Forum today, co-hosted with Mental Health Australia, that will look closer at the CCBHC program and include a panel discussion on what this might mean for Australia.
