Climate justice is an LGBTQ+ issue 🌍🌈 Our most recent research on the mental health of LGBTQ+ young people revealed that climate change is causing increasing alarm amongst queer and trans youth — with a majority reporting that they worry about climate change “a lot”. “Our data show that today’s LGBTQ+ young people are tuned into the world they are inheriting, reporting frequent worries about climate change,” said Dr. Steven Hobaica, a research scientist at the Trevor Project. Why does intersectionality matter when it relates to supporting Black LGBTQ+ young people? 🌈 When we don’t take into account the intersectionality that this community experiences on a day-to-day basis, we neglect a major facet of providing adequate support and resources. Our guide outlines that Black LGBTQ+ young people are not inherently prone to suicide risk because of their race, sexual orientation, or gender identity, but rather, they are placed at higher risk because of how they are mistreated and stigmatized in society. This could be because of several reasons, including but not limited to: 📢Current events 📢Being exposed to Anti-Black & Anti-LGBTQ+ Rhetoric 📢Compounded grief over time 📢Direct or indirect experience of Anti-Black Violence All of this being said, supporting Black LGBTQ+ young people is crucial to ensuring a world where they can thrive and not just survive. Queer justice is disability justice. Our movements, identities, and lived experiences are all intersectional and interconnected. Our hearts are in Sharon, Pennsylvania today as we mourn the unfathomable loss of Pauly Likens, a fourteen-year-old trans teen who had been missing from her family since June. Pauly is remembered as a “selfless, loving child who loved nature, getting her nails done, and shopping.” She aspired to be a park ranger. As we mourn the loss of Pauly Likens, and all trans children taken too soon at the hands of violence, we funnel our outrage into action. We will always, always show up for queer and trans youth — they need our allyship and love more than ever. Trans and nonbinary young people deserve to become trans and nonbinary adults. Prior to joining The Trevor Project, Jaymes was the President & CEO of Family Equality, the leading national organization working to ensure that everyone has the freedom to find, form, and sustain their families by advancing LGBTQ+ equality through advocacy, support, storytelling, and education. July is BIPOC Mental Health Awareness Month — an important time to center the mental health and lived experiences of BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) LGBTQ+ young people. Of course, one month of recognition will never be enough. For decades, BIPOC communities have faced systemic inequalities, structural racism, discrimination, and social injustices — all of which have profound impacts on mental health and livelihood. Injustice is a heavy and unnecessary burden to bear. This BIPOC Mental Health Awareness Month, it is essential to highlight the disparities that exist in access to mental health services among BIPOC communities. Research from our 2024 U.S. National Survey shows that Black and Latinx LGBTQ+ young people had higher rates of considering or attempting suicide in the last year than their white peers. That’s why we must continue to advocate for equitable resources and destigmatize both asking for and receiving help. As we also recognize Disability Pride Month this July, we uplift BIPOC folks with disabilities living beautiful, full lives — and acknowledge the additional barriers faced by folks with layers of marginalization.
