NIH researchers have found that being a carrier for sickle cell disease increases the risk of blood clots, a risk that is the same among diverse human populations. Researchers examined the largest and most diverse set of people with sickle cell trait to date, which includes data from over 19,000 people of various ancestral backgrounds with sickle cell trait. Previous research on sickle cell trait and blood clots have only included individuals of African genetic ancestry and self-identified Black participants due to the incorrect assumption that the genetic carrier state only affects those who identify as Black or African American. The results of this study will help clinicians properly contextualize the risk of blood clots amongst people with sickle cell trait without unintended bias. September is #SickleCellAwarenessMonth. Sickle cell disease is a painful, life-long blood disorder that affects around 100,000 Americans today. Many of the current treatments for sickle cell disease only offer short-term relief. Researchers are now exploring new gene therapy treatments. The hope is that gene therapy can be a curative treatment and improve symptoms. It’s crucial that patients with sickle cell disease who are considering gene therapy have the opportunity to fully understand the meaning and limitations of treatments. This way, they can make an informed decision on whether to participate. Patients need accessible, understandable, and actionable educational materials to help them make such decisions. That’s why researchers at NHGRI led a project to create educational materials to help the sickle cell disease community learn about gene therapy. These resources include information about the clinical trial process, its benefits and risks, mental health considerations and the science behind the treatment. A microbiome is the community of microorganisms (such as fungi, bacteria, and viruses) that live in or on a particular site – such as part of the human body (e.g., skin or gastrointestinal tract). Even though some microbes can cause dangerous infections, there are many that you depend upon to live a healthy life! Viral and bacterial genomes may each be small, but as a community, they are packed with lots of genes and some surprises about evolution and human health. Each person has several million genomic variants and only a very small subset of these variants play a role in human health and disease — but which ones? How genomic variations affect genome function and in turn influence human traits is challenging to study partly because of the sheer number of genomic variants that have been identified.
