Diversity, equity and inclusion are not just buzzwords, and advancing DEI in parks and recreation is not a fad. — it is essential work that shapes the communities we serve. But let's also be real. This work is hard and it’s complex. Let’s face it: sometimes it can feel like you’re trying to assemble a piece of IKEA furniture without the instructions – frustrating, full of detours, and somehow, you end up with some pieces that don’t seem to fit anywhere. So, where do you even start? We have heard you loud and clear and responded with a game-changing resource: the Equity Quick Guides. Read the full blog from Tiff Cunin (they/them), our senior manager of education for DEI and Autumn Saxton-Ross (she/her), our chief education & equity officer, to learn more and access the guides: https://bit.ly/3B1oVhQ #PowerOfParks #DEI #Diversity #Equity Inclusion #WhereYouBelong #ParksAndRec #NRPAEducation

In recent years, the growing impacts of climate change have galvanized youth across the globe to demand action and advocate for sustainable policies. In Los Angeles County, this movement has been embodied by the establishment of the Youth Climate Commission (YCC). Formed in response to advocacy by local youth climate leaders, the YCC is the first of its kind in the nation and seeks to bring the voices and concerns of young people into government decision-making processes. Officially launched in June 2023, the YCC has initiated efforts to engage with youth in L.A. County and identify their climate priorities. Pollinators are essential to our ecosystem. Over 75% of the world's flowering plants and 35% of the world's crops rely on pollinators. Did you know that one out of every three bites of food you eat is there because of pollinators? They not only are essential for our food production but also support healthy ecosystems. That's why, over the course of September, park and recreation agencies across the country are holding Parks for Pollinators BioBlitz. What's a BioBlitz? It's an event where community members work with park agencies to collect observations on pollinators in their area. This raises awareness of pollinators (they're more than just bumblebees!), increases local data on species, and supports local parks. If you are looking to get involved, it's not too late! Turn to your local park agency, wherever they post updates to see if they are participating. Download the iNaturalist app and find your local BioBlitz, join, and start making observations! For agencies who haven't signed up, there's still time! We encourage sign ups throughout September. Join during the month to win one of three $1,000 prizes and one of three Scotts Miracle-Gro prize packs to help with your pollinator habitats or programs! This past September, the Maryland Recreation and Parks Association hosted what is thought to be the first-ever state trainings solely focused on the 2SLGBTQIA+ community. The benefits of 2SLGBTQIA+ inclusion in parks and recreation are numerous. It provides 2SLGBTQIA+ individuals with a sense of belonging and acceptance, reduces social isolation, and improves mental health outcomes. Providing community members with recreational opportunities that are relevant to their interests and identities improves overall quality of life. Moreover, it promotes social cohesion and understanding by bringing people from different backgrounds together in common spaces. The National Recreation and Park Ethnic Minority Society does some incredible work to connect and support diverse and underrepresented park and recreation professionals. On this throwback episode of Open Space Radio, Cort is joined by Chris Bass and Thamara Velasco at the 2023 NRPA Annual Conference in Dallas where they discuss.. 🌱How NRPEMS is building community for park and recreation professionals of diverse cultures and backgrounds 🌱Why it’s important to have a network focused on diverse professionals in our industry 🌱How NRPEMS has been beneficial for Chris and Thamara in their careers 🌱What being part of NRPEMS and being park and recreation professionals serving their community means to Chris and Thamara 🌱How to get involved with the NRPEMS, and much more! The energy in this episode is really excellent, mostly because of the great guests but also might be because it was recorded at the nation's largest park and rec professional gathering 😎 Listen now: https://bit.ly/4eiVEO8 #OpenSpaceRadio #PowerOfParks #WhereYouBelong

“When I was approached to teach Teen Mental Health First Aid to the members of the East Brunswick, New Jersey, Youth Council, I was immediately taken aback. Rampant thoughts of disbelief entered my mind. The very thought of putting a child’s mental wellness in my hands terrified me, and it nearly dissuaded me from even considering going forward with the certification process. My friend and colleague, John Roche, told me that even if we helped just one student who was going through a mental health challenge, all the work that we put in would have been worth it. Now, more than 100 students know how to look for warning signs, ask their friends how they are, listen, and help as certified Teen Mental Health First Aiders.” Read the full article from Ashley Faulcon, Program Coordinator, Youth/Community Services at Township of East Brunswick: https://bit.ly/3AOvX9N #PowerOfParks #ParksAndRec #MentalHealth #Health #Wellness #Parks #Recreation #WhereYouBelong #ParksAndRecMagazine
