On June 17, iEARN-USA's National Security Language Initiative for Youth (NSLI-Y) Chinese and Korean Summer students gathered in San Francisco for Pre-Departure Orientation before departing for Taiwan and South Korea. The students discussed the intersections of identity and culture with their Resident Directors and #NSLIY alum Alejandra Robles, drafted community pacts, and got to know their fellow cohort members. On May 15, iEARN-USA's National Security Language Initiative for Youth (NSLI-Y) Academic Year students returned from their year-long programs in Taiwan and Korea. Students finished off their year with final presentations and then traveled to Washington, D.C. to present to members of the State Department and meet with Congressional representatives on the Hill to share about the impact of NSLI-Y. Veeka Malanchuk, a recent graduate of Beloit College and National Security Language Initiative for Youth (NSLI-Y) 2019 alumna, visited Vilnius, Lithuania on May 26-31, through a grant received from her university. From September 2023 through May 2024 Veeka worked with EducationUSA Belarus' Competitive College Club students and general advisees as a part of the Virtual Student Federal Service (#VSFS) internship. Each year, two students from various HEIs work with Belarus advisers on programming for students, however this was the first time we’ve had the pleasure of meeting one of our VSFS participants and have them conduct in-person activities for our Belarusian audiences. The week started with a presentation on Memorial Day at Vilnius’ American Corner at Lithuania's National Library in cooperation with EducationUSA Vilnius. Among the 9 attendees were library workers, teachers, parents and students from Lithuania and Belarus. Veeka also joined other office activities, such as a presentation in Vilnius on May 28 and EHU Fest on May 30 together with the Belarus team. On May 31, Veeka conducted a session for 30 middle schoolers at the Stembridge international school, whose student body is largely comprised of Belarusians. Later that the day she joined Elena Mikhailava for the final Competitive College Club session of the first semester. American Councils is dedicated to making international education #accessible to everyone. The U.S. Study Abroad Assistance Fund was established to help U.S. students with a demonstrated financial need participate in select programs. The Assistance Fund provides financial support for pre-program expenses associated with traveling abroad, including travel costs, technology support, medical check-ups, vaccines, and other incidentals. Eligible program finalists can apply for up to $300 in support towards covering extra costs. The Assistance Fund is available for finalists of our virtual and in-person programs starting on or before August 1, 2024.
