How are you supporting your “butterfly” students? Exciting efforts from New Visions for Public Schools shows remarkable progress with their “butterfly” students—those who want to be at school but often miss a day or two weekly. After implementing weekly 1:1 check-ins, 81% of these students saw significant improvements in their attendance this spring! This is part of our work with EdBreak, an improvement learning cohort sponsored last spring by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to uncover how the #BreakthroughCollaborative model can translate from healthcare (IHI) to education. Thanks to leaders Jaime Esperon and Jonathan Green for turning a hunch into a #changepackage and the one and only Kelly McMahon, my EdBreak partner! What makes the science curriculum work at New Visions unique is the close collaboration with our teacher leaders. This past week, the science team convened two of our best teacher leaders, Charlie Link (DeWitt Clinton HS) and Andrea Sau (Mott Hall HS Bronx) to develop updated pacing guides and guidance on how to incorporate the new NYSED science investigations into our Biology and Earth and Space Science curriculum. Science teachers across the city will benefit from their hard work, as they plan for the school year and prepare for the new New York Science Learning Standards (NYSSLS)-aligned Regents exam this year.

Today we had the honor of hosting the kick off for new working groups that will support the Every Child and Family is Known initiative for the upcoming school year. This effort involves matching students in temporary housing with caring adults in their schools who build trusting relationships with families to connect them with critical services to meet their needs. New Visions for Public Schools is leveraging our Portal to connect the scores of schools, agencies and providers with one another to ensure services are coordinated and responsive. We are excited to be building the technology that meets the needs of this moment when our school system is faced with larger numbers of housing insecure families than ever before.
