What a transformation! We are making substantial progress on the Owl’s Head portion of the Brooklyn Waterfront Greenway. The project establishes the southernmost leg of the Greenway, linking the neighborhoods of Sunset Park and Bay Ridge, where the Greenway will ultimately connect to the Shore Parkway Esplanade. The project will provide safer access to parks and recreational spaces along the waterfront, improve sustainability by capturing storm water, and stimulate economic development by providing connections to employment centers in Downtown Brooklyn and the Sunset Park, Gowanus, and Red Hook neighborhoods.

We continue to make progress on the Shirley Chisholm Recreation Center in Brooklyn. "This project is not only a monument to the famed civil rights leader Shirley Chisholm, it also represents a milestone in city construction as we continue to implement design-build in our capital program," said DDC Commissioner Foley. "The design-build method involves contracting teams' designers and builders together as one unit, leading to fewer delays and conflicts, better problem solving, and faster and more efficient projects. Using design-build, we plan to complete the new Shirley Chisholm Recreation Center by the end of 2025 – two full years faster than would be expected with lowest bidder contracting." Upon its completion at the end of 2025, the state-of-the-art recreation center will offer programs and amenities to encourage learning, recreation, and community and civic engagement.

DDC Commissioner Foley joined Staten Island Borough President Vito Fossella and Council Member Kamillah Hanks for a tour of the Mariner's Harbor Community Center project, which is almost complete. DDC is working on renovating the 2,700-square-foot space into a multi-purpose community center that serves youth and adults from the Mariner's Harbor Houses and the surrounding area. We thank Architecture in Formation PC and NATIONAL ENVIRONMENTAL SAFETY CO INC for their work on this project, as well as the DDC team.

Today DDC joined the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, the Mayor's Community Affairs Unit, Marvel and others for a topping off ceremony on the new Animal Care Center in the Baychester neighborhood of the Bronx. The new 50,000-square-foot Center will provide necessary animal care and adoption services that support a safe, healthy, comfortable and humane environment for animals, staff and visitors. The Center will house admissions, adoptions, medical services and boarding for approximately 70 dogs, 140 cats, 30 rabbits and up to 20 animals of other species. Open areas on the site will include yards to facilitate dog adoptions, covered exercise runs, courtyards and parking for staff, visitors and animal transportation vehicles, as well as site lighting and low-maintenance native planting throughout. In addition to the animal housing, the Center will include a community space.

DDC Commissioner Foley welcomed Deputy Mayor Joshi to the Borough-Based Jail site in Brooklyn this week, showing progress with excavation and shoring for future foundation work.

Celebrations in Brooklyn today as we joined the Brooklyn Children's Museum, NYC Department of Cultural Affairs, elected officials, and others to break ground on a $15 million renovation project that will rebuild the Museum's retaining walls as well as renovate and modernize the organization’s courtyard and terraces. The project will address critical infrastructure needs while setting the groundwork for enhancing the Museum's outdoor spaces, ultimately creating 20,000 square feet of accessible, outdoor, programmable space for young people and their families from across Brooklyn and beyond. Today DDC joined Queens Public Library President and CEO Dennis M. Walcott, elected officials, and the community to celebrate the re-opening of the Broadway Library in Astoria! 🎉🎉 Located at 40-20 Broadway, the library’s underutilized, 6,120-square-foot basement storage area was redesigned and expanded to create a large lobby with a spacious front desk and other amenities, including a new computer center. Other improvements include updates to an existing classroom and meeting room with a stage area; a new (HVAC) system; multiple ADA-compliant restrooms; and more. “The renovations at the Broadway Branch has given visitors and staff a whole new level with room for multiple computer stations as well as a classroom, meeting room and stage area,” said DDC Commissioner Foley. “Projects like these would benefit greatly from a contracting method called Construction Manager-Build (CM-Build). We have a bill in Albany that has been passed by the legislature which will give us the right to use CM-Build for projects involving libraries and cultural institutions. We need to get that bill signed so that the City can bring these important facilities to New Yorkers both faster and cheaper.” Read more: https://on.nyc.gov/4dGponS
