🚨 BREAKING: We have officially filed our legal case against recent oil and gas licences in UK waters! ⚖️ Our legal case highlights the failure of the previous government to consider the extreme impact of oil spills, the ongoing climate crisis, and the disregard for expert advice. It’s clear: These licences threaten our ocean, our marine protected areas, our wildlife, and our climate. 👊 In collaboration with Greenpeace UK, Friends of the Earth Scotland, and 19 other NGOs, we’ve also sent an open letter to the Secretary of State, urging him to concede our case. 🌊 The new government now has a chance to demonstrate true leadership by withdrawing these licences and protecting our seas. According to EU laws, its citizens cannot support or benefit from illegal fishing. However, Member States do not have a comprehensive system in place to identify foreign ownership of fishing vessels. Many companies, including those with EU owners, hide behind complex corporate structures to exploit fisheries resources in non-EU countries, where controls might be weaker. At #Paris2024, beverages are being sold to spectators in reusable packaging, which could potentially replace millions of single-use plastic cups. But the truth is, many of these drinks are being poured into reusable cups from single–use plastic bottles, defeating the purpose of reuse in reducing plastic waste. So while large-scale reuse systems CAN have a major impact on the environment – and can be implemented in situations just like these games – the reality here falls short of the mark. Despite the flaws, the inclusion of reuse at Paris 2024 remains a beacon of hope for the oceans. There is a growing trend for large events like this to use reusable packaging, and Oceana is pushing for reuse to be done more, and to be done better. Learn more: https://oceana.ly/4djTvlg
