Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison LLP reposted this
So, this is 30. The first in my family to attend law school, I arrived in NYC with one suit, no money, and no passport. (Paul, Weiss Class of 1994 photo below.) I chose to attend law school after three years using my Public Policy graduate degree working in New York State government. My “plan” was to go straight back into policy or politics. Dean Dorsey D. Ellis, Jr. persuaded me to spend “at least one year” in NYC at a “big law” firm. That I am still at Paul, Weiss 30 years on, with a passport and more than one suit, says a great deal about the firm. From the moment I arrived, I was amazed by the talent, drive, vision, and creativity of my colleagues. I was also struck by the incredible culture and support. The firm chose Rob Holo as my associate mentor for my very brief stint in the Tax Department and Jeffrey Greenbaum as my associate mentor when I moved into the Litigation Department. That both continue to guide (and more often than not, ridicule) me is an example of the enduring friendships and relationships I’ve managed to establish while having a blast practicing law every day at the highest level. The firm was smaller then but our tremendous growth and success hasn’t dimmed any of the essential elements that I found so special when I chose Paul, Weiss all those years ago. I never would have imagined when I started that I’d still be at Paul, Weiss, that I’d have traveled the world for my clients (and now help oversee our International Practice with my wonderful colleagues Krishna Veeraraghavan, Laura Turano, and Maria-Leticia Ossa Daza), and that I’d have such amazing and interesting clients who make the practice fun. (Okay, I probably imagined I’d get some more suits.) So, for those adding Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison LLP or another firm to their LinkedIn for the first time, this is a way of saying — enjoy the ride. You can’t know where it will lead but if you are having fun and surrounded by talented people you respect and can count on — not just as colleagues but as friends — you are in for a great journey.
