Just a short walk from the Plymouth waterfront and Mayflower II, Plimoth Grist Mill tells the story of the water-powered corn grinding mill built by Plymouth Colony in 1636. First opened in 1970, the Plimoth Grist Mill is a reproduction of Plymouth Colony’s 1636 mill. Inspired to build a full-scale reproduction of the 1636 mill on its original location, engineer David DeLory purchased the land from the Plymouth Redevelopment Authority in 1969. Based on designs by Al Battista, construction started later that year and the Jenney Grist Mill opened in the summer of 1970. The mill proved to be a popular Plymouth destination throughout its history and was added as a Plimoth Patuxet exhibit in 2013. While not built by the Museum itself, Plimoth Grist Mill was always part of Founder Harry Hornblower’s vision for the Museum and serves as a dynamic living history exhibit with hands-on educational opportunities for learners of all ages. We’re buzzing with excitement because four of the Museum’s gardens are now recognized as part of the Pollinator Pathways program in Plymouth! Our 137-acre main campus, located at 137 Warren Avenue, is home to a wide variety of native plants that nourish pollinators from bees to hummingbirds to monarch butterflies. The pollinator gardens include the Visitor Center Pathway Garden, the Patuxet Homesite Gardens, the 17th-Century English Village Gardens, and the forthcoming Pollinator Garden at the Craft Center Pavilion. Organized through Sustainable Plymouth and part of the larger Pollinator Pathways program nationwide, the program encourages the public to learn more about native pollinator-friendly plants. #PlimothPatuxet #Pollinators #Museums #PlymouthMA

In 1973, Plimoth Patuxet Museum was one of the first living history museums in the United States to make Indigenous content and perspectives central to its exhibits and educational programs. That year, the Museum established the Native American Studies Program, later known as the Wampanoag Indigenous Program. Indigenous knowledge keepers and culture bearers laid the groundwork for the program. Dr. Helen Attaquin (Mashpee Wampanoag), and Dr. Ella Sekatau (Narragansett historian and medicine woman), shared their knowledge and guidance in the early days and paved the way for today’s program. Nanepashemet (Assonet Wampanoag), began as a historical interpreter at Plimoth Patuxet in 1975 and advanced to the position of Curator and Director of the Program. Innovative programming on the Historic Patuxet Homeiste has evolved over decades, shaped by many Indigenous voices and hands. New generations of Museum Educators have brought new visions, conversations, and ideas. The Historic Patuxet Homesite remains committed to sharing the culture and lifeways of the Indigenous people of the Northeast in an authentic way with its ever-expanding audiences.

Each day across our immersive exhibits Museum Educators create meaningful encounters with history. Through decades of research about the Indigenous and European people who met along these shores of change in the 17th century, thought-stirring conversations are sparked. Exploring these interwoven stories, our guests and lifelong learners expand their cultural understanding and empathy. We are grateful to you – our community, guests, and supporters – for joining the conversation and participating with this living history museum. #PlimothPatuxet #Museums #Plymouth
