In an effort to help more Rhode Island families build their home libraries and spark a love of reading from an early age, Senator Jack Reed is teaming up with Reach Out and Read Rhode Island through a $50,000 federal earmark to expand the organization’s early literacy program for an additional 6,000 children who receive care at Providence Community Health Centers. PCHC is committed to building upon our longstanding history of providing primary services such as prenatal care, pediatrics, adolescent medicine, adult medicine and elder care. In meeting the growing needs of our current and future patients, we also provide specialty care, school-based services, and community-focused patient education. We dedicate ourselves to collaborating with government agencies and other organizations to meet the medical and service support needs of the families and individuals that we are privileged to serve.

“Helping children -- especially when they’re anxious or scared -- and seeing the smiles on their faces when they come in for their visits, is incredibly fulfilling. It motivates me to go the extra mile and make a positive impact in their lives.” Congratulations to Leticia Lima, a health center assistant at our Capitol Hill center, who was one of the 2024 Beacon Award winners recognized by the Rhode Island Health Center Association in August. She is pictured below second from left with her colleagues at the awards ceremony. Click here to read more about Letitia! https://lnkd.in/en6m6DZ9

Thank you to the Department of Environmental Management and our partners at PODS SWIMMING for helping more young people learn water safety and swimming skills this summer. PODS has partnered with us since 2018 to give free lessons to our young patients, an opportunity these children would not have otherwise. There were more than 100 children enrolled in this latest series of classes, our largest number by far! The funding from DEM was supplemented by a swim-a-thon fundraiser held by PODS earlier this year to raise money for these lessons. Thank you to the PODS team for their ongoing commitment to teaching children this important life skill! https://lnkd.in/eqV9bQUG

Providence Community Health Centers is excited to announce the opening of our new adult dental clinic, a $2.5 million investment in community oral health in Providence. The clinic includes nine operatories, an on-site laboratory, and x-ray capabilities. Thank you to Delta Dental of Rhode Island and our congressional delegation for your support, which will help us address the critical shortage of dentists caring for underserved patients, most of whom are adults insured through Medicaid. Joseph Perroni, President, Delta Dental of RI, Kyu Rhee, MD, MPP, President and CEO, National Association of Community Health Centers, and Dr. Samuel Zwetchkenbaum, Dental Director, Oral Health Program, Rhode Island Department of Health, joined several of our leadership team members on the speaking program. All in all, a great day for community dental health in Rhode Island! Read here to learn more: https://lnkd.in/e22V8WUs

4th post of National Health Center Week (NHCW), an annual celebration that is happening from Sunday, August 4 to Saturday, August 10! This is an opportunity to celebrate the over 300K Community Health Center (CHC) staff/board leaders and key partners of our movement who make it possible to provide high quality, comprehensive, integrated, and affordable primary care to over 32.5 million patients or 1 in 10 across over 15K sites in rural, frontier, urban, suburban, tribal, and island communities across our nation. Please learn more about #NHCW24, read The White House proclamation, and join an event at: https://lnkd.in/eKXV5YJe; https://lnkd.in/eVZpgg7p. On Monday, August 5, Sue Joss and I had the privilege of seeing 2 CHCs in the great state of Rhode Island where CHCs serve 1 in 5 residents. With the thoughtful CEO of the Rhode Island Health Center Association Elena Nicolella and the innovative CEO of Providence Community Health Centers (PCHC) Merrill Thomas, we participated in a ribbon cutting and press conference for a new adult dental clinic with their "Partners of Choice" Joseph Perroni, CEO and President of Delta Dental of Rhode Island, Matthew Blackey, Director of PCHC Dental and Specialty Services, Dr. Erica Knarr, PCHC Clinical Dental Director, and Samuel Zwetchkenbaum, State Dental Director of the Rhode Island Department of Health. Established in 1968, PCHC serves as the largest primary health care provider in the state of Rhode Island. Seeing their state-of-the-art facilities and spending time with their impressive staff, I can see how they are also an "Employer and Provider of Choice" in their community. Their vision is "to make a difference in the communities we serve by striving to eliminate health disparities and racism; responding to diverse health care needs; and improving the quality of life for the medically underserved." PCHC provides high quality primary health care services that are affordable, comprehensive and culturally sensitive to more than 80,000 residents of Providence and its surrounding areas. Their services include: Family Practice, Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, Obstetrics, Gynecology, Behavioral Health, Optometry (photo below with a lot of “high tech toys”), Dental Care and Express Care (urgent care) alongside with selected specialty services. I had a firsthand look at so many innovations and their team-based model of primary care that integrates across all of these key divisions and disciplines. Please learn more and support them at: https://lnkd.in/eFpzGxCd. National Association of Community Health Centers (NACHC) believes that CHCs like Providence Community Health Centers are the best, most innovative, most resilient, and most diverse part of our health system. We stand united with CHCs for and with the people we have served and will serve as “the best is yet to come.” Please learn more and support the CHC movement at: https://www.nachc.org. #NHCW24 #HealthCenters #ValueCHCs #FundCHCs #WeAreNACHC
