Energy used for heating and cooling comprises approximately 50 percent of total global final energy demand and 39 percent of energy-related carbon dioxide emissions. In the United States, heating and cooling account for more than 25 percent of total energy use across residential, commercial, and industrial sectors at a cost of $270 billion annually. Despite its large energy and carbon footprint and its significant potential to reduce carbon emissions, the use of renewable energy for heating and cooling applications, including biomass, biogas, geothermal, landfill gas, renewable electrification, renewable hydrogen, and solar thermal, has received relatively little attention compared with renewable electricity. The Renewable Thermal Collaborative (RTC) serves as the leading coalition for organizations that are committed to scaling up renewable heating and cooling at their facilities and dramatically cutting carbon emissions. RTC members recognize the growing demand and necessity for renewable heating and cooling and the urgent need to meet this demand in a manner that delivers sustainable, cost-competitive options at scale. The Renewable Thermal Collaborative is facilitated by the Center for Climate and Energy Solutions, David Gardiner and Associates, and World Wildlife Fund.

Check out this decarbonization progress update from RTC Member Henkel! Slide through all four images to see #solar #pv and #industrialheatpump deployments. Congratulations to the team at Henkel!!!
🌿 Achieving #NetZero emissions is not an easy task, especially as a manufacturing company, but we are tackling this challenge step by step! In Europe, we have now completely converted our production processes for consumer goods to carbon-neutral energy. This is the result of our efforts over many years to reduce our energy consumption through more efficient processes and to rely on renewable sources for the remaining energy required. By 2030, we want to reduce the CO2 emissions of our production processes worldwide by 67% and source 100% of our electricity from #renewable sources. Here are a few impressions from our production plants 👇:

RTC #thermalstorage Solutions Provider Brenmiller Energy will provide low-carbon steam to a PPF plant in Hungary, and will do so via a 12-year #HaaS agreement. #HeatasaService/#EnergyasaService are critical tools to overcome limited internal CapEx and short payback requirements. Like PPAs for renewable electricity, innovative financing is a potential game-changer and scale-maker. Looking forward to seeing this project - and many more - come online.
At PPF, sustainability has always been at our core. In 2022, we launched our sustainability strategy, so called PETS—comprising Performance, Environment, Team, and Society. PETS serves as our guiding north star toward more sustainable operations. A key focus within our Environment pillar is addressing Climate Impacts. We’ve set an ambitious target, validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), to reduce our absolute Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions by 42% by 2030, relative to a 2021 baseline. Additionally, we are also committed to cut our Scope 3 GHG emissions by 42% across various categories within the same timeframe compared to a 2021 baseline. We are excited to share that we recently entered 12-year Heat as a Service (HaaS) agreement with Brenmiller Energy. This strategic partnership is a significant leap forward in our commitment to sustainability! Through this agreement, Brenmiller will provide low-cost, low-carbon steam to our operations at our Dombóvár plant in Hungary. This system will replace our current fossil fuel boilers, greatly reducing our energy costs and carbon footprint. “Our company is committed to sustainability, and Brenmiller’s turnkey bGen technology is an ideal way for us to prepare our manufacturing operations for the future". Gerald Kühr, CEO at PPF. We wouldn’t have been able to achieve this without our great people involved in this project: Dénes Szegi, Attila Geller, Judit Tamás, Izabella Balanyine, Zsolt Szanto Bocsi, Eszter Barta, Torsten Jacobs, Romain Barral and many more!

In our newest case study, Solar Thermal at Boortmalt Malting Plant, RTC Solutions Provider Kyotherm helped Boortmalt reduce #carbonemissions at its malting plant in Issoudun, France by developing and financing a #solarthermal plant based on an Energy-as-a-Service (#EaaS) model. Preheating the air used for barley drying with solar heat reduces Boortmalt’s use of gas boilers, enabling the company to reduce its exposure to volatile natural gas prices and cut its emissions by 2,100 metric tons of CO2 per year. The solar thermal plant meets 10% of the malting plant’s thermal energy demand, with the remaining thermal load met by waste-derived biomass (25%), gas cogeneration (15%), and traditional gas boilers (50%). Thanks to the EaaS model and Boortmalt’s partnership with Kyotherm, the company implemented the solar thermal plant with no capital investment and now enjoys energy cost savings. Congruent Ventures and Silicon Valley Bank just published their list of 50 companies "that have strong potential to abate significant greenhouse gas emissions over the next 25 years." (They note that it's not an exhaustive list.) We want to congratulate the four RTC Solutions Providers that are included: Antora Energy, AtmosZero, Fervo Energy, and Skyven Technologies. Read more at the link below. All four companies - and a slew of other tech and financing innovators - will be at the RTC Summit Sep 30-Oct 1. Come meet them.
We are thrilled to unveil our 50 by 2050 list co-authored with Silicon Valley Bank. The list highlights the climate tech companies that are pioneering carbon reduction solutions that may help us reach net zero emissions. While climate change is daunting, we are encouraged by the entrepreneurial energy that is rising to meet the challenge. Congratulations to Andrew Ponec from RTC Solutions Provider Antora Energy. #Thermalenergystorage is a game-changing category for #decarbonization and #electrification.
Just in: Antora Co-Founder and CEO Andrew Ponec has been named to MIT Technology Review’s 2024 list of Innovators Under 35! Andrew and his co-founders started Antora from a simple question: how could they make the biggest impact on climate change? The answer was clear: manufacturing is the single largest driver of climate change, accounting for a staggering 30% of global emissions. And the only way to restore a livable planet is to take that number down to zero. Today, Antora is bridging the gap between renewable energy and industrial manufacturing, supplying zero-emissions heat and power to factories with batteries made in America. Read how Andrew and the Antora team are electrifying industrial facilities with clean energy that's cheaper than fossil fuels: https://lnkd.in/eFuhUgR3

New RTC Solutions Provider Magaldi Green Energy develops innovative technologies for thermal energy storage. It is part of the Magaldi Group, a leader in providing customized solutions for conveying materials at extremely high temperatures (over 1000°C) and under severe process conditions which was founded in Italy in 1929. The company's MGTES solution is an Electro Thermal Energy Storage system designed to support the decarbonization of industrial processes and power systems to advance sustainable development. The system charges with electricity from #renewable sources or directly from the grid, storing #energy for hours or even days as sensible heat in a fluidized sand bed and discharging it as fully dispatchable steam. MGTES allows for simultaneous or independent electrical charging and steam generation, enabling price arbitrage across energy sources. As a result, the system not only reduces reliance on fossil fuels but also optimizes heat generation costs. Learn more: https://lnkd.in/ddJFQZfP #sustainability #decarbonization #energy #climate
