We’re thrilled to share an update on our partnership with Southside ReLeaf and GroundworkRVA to bring more green spaces to Richmond! In a recent article, Southside ReLeaf intern Maya Basnyat used thermal imaging to reveal temperature differences of up to 50 degrees between shaded and unshaded areas in South Richmond. This highlights the urgent need to address the urban heat island effect, particularly in underserved neighborhoods. Working with the City’s Park and Recreation Department, we’re expanding access to nearby green spaces to ensure lasting community impact. Our first project with these partners involves revamping Ernest Road Park—with RES providing technical training and leadership to remove invasive species across 60,000+ square feet of urban forest canopy and plant over 6,000 native forest plants to enrich the ecosystem and create high-quality natural areas for the local community. Muck-boot thoughts of the day: 1) This water/climate stuff is getting real, man. To those directly affected, my heart hurts for you. It is devastating, such a disruption to life, but you will get through it. Flooding here in PA today, but I think the worst has passed. 2) Many of us are tackling big water and climate issues. The best time to plant a tree was 20 (or 50) years ago; the next best time is now. We’re growing nationwide in ecosystem restoration and need help. We have construction, real estate, legal, project management, business development, EPC, and ecology jobs. It’s rewarding work with a great team. Exciting progress is happening at the Pea Hill Branch Project, part of our contract with Corvias and The Clean Water Partnership (CWP) program. We're stabilizing and restoring 5,139 LF of incised stream channel. This vital work will reduce 284 pounds of phosphorus, 554 tons of sediment, and 760 pounds of nitrogen per year, yielding over 500 Impervious Acre Credits. Construction began in March 2024 and is on track for completion in early fall 2024. I'm excited to share that the Buffalo Bayou Park Revegetation and Biostabilization Project in Houston, TX has received a Water Innovation Strategies of Excellence (WISE) Award for “Research and Monitoring.” The success of this project was achieved through a collaborative effort by Harris County Flood Control District, Buffalo Bayou Partnership, SWA, Biohabitats, and Resource Environmental Solutions LLC. During the project, RES provided expertise in riparian restoration, including construction, planting, and monitoring. Since 2005, we have been working with Heidelberg Materials on a crucial mitigation project in the Lower Des Plaines River Valley of Illinois. The project features the first full Habitat Conservation Plan (HCP) to be approved by the USFWS Chicago Field Office. Our team is restoring, enhancing, and/or preserving more than 500 acres of wetland habitat and adjacent uplands for the benefit of the federally endangered Hine’s emerald dragonfly (photo credit: Richard & Susan Day/Danita Delimont), the state-endangered Blanding’s turtle and Spotted turtle, and two federally listed plant species. As part of this endeavor, we preserved a rare six-acre wet-mesic dolomite prairie by transplanting it piece-by-piece to a suitable location within the mitigation area. This specific ecosystem is crucial to the survival of the Hine’s emerald dragonfly. Moving a six-acre wetland community to a new location is quite a feat, but our dedicated team, which included Thornton Equipment Services, was up to the task.
