Our Habitat Restoration team had an amazing time hosting a recent community kayak outing in the City of Newburgh! It was fantastic to paddle alongside residents and partners Outdoor Promise and Crystal Lake Sanctuary Healing Gardens, exploring the Hudson River and Quassaick Creek up close. The Quassaick Creek, a vital tributary of the Hudson River, is a major focus of our habitat restoration efforts. We had the chance to share insights about our dam removal projects, which are essential for restoring habitats and supporting wildlife. A big shoutout to the Newburgh Waterways Center for providing the kayaks and ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience for all! A special thanks to the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation for their support through the grant that makes this important work possible 🌊🐟 #Riverkeeper #KayakDay #HudsonRiver

Saturday marks three years until the legal deadline to close Rikers Island. Alongside members of the Renewable Rikers Coalition (a group of formerly incarcerated individuals and affected families, prison reform advocates, and environmental justice groups), Riverkeeper has long pushed for the passage of legislation that will close the jail and study the feasibility of renewable energy development, battery storage, and wastewater treatment on the island. Earlier this year, Riverkeeper Legal Program Director Mike Dulong was interviewed by The City about the plan to turn Rikers Island into a hub for sustainable energy production and wastewater treatment. New York City released reports that found it feasible to build a new wastewater treatment plant on the island, as well as “solar, battery storage and new equipment to feed offshore wind power into the electric grid.” Read the article here: https://ow.ly/pkkA50T7V9w Rendering via NYC DEP #renewablerikers #cleanenergy #renewables #closerikers

Remember when they said brat summer was over? 😎 In the Hudson, the summer belongs to striped bass. They’re everywhere during the warmer months, after migrating hundreds of miles from the ocean to our river and its tributaries in order to spawn. It’s not so confusing — these fish are a critical part of our ecosystem and the intricate web of life on which so much depends. Restoring necessary habitat and protecting this important species? It’s what we do 24/7/365.

Look up in the sky over the next few days and you'll see a sturgeon — a sturgeon moon that is 🌕 This week's full moon is known as the "sturgeon moon," a name given by Indigenous people due to the fact that the fish migrate upstream in the summer months. These beautiful and elusive species have called the Hudson home since the last Ice Age, though they are now considered endangered due to overfishing, habitat loss, and pollution. Riverkeeper recently teamed up with Delaware Riverkeeper to issue formal notices of intent to sue New York, New Jersey, and Delaware for the illegal killing of these endangered fish. Our findings show Atlantic sturgeon are being killed in high, unreported numbers, violating the Endangered Species Act. Read more: https://ow.ly/p97t50T1iut Riverkeeper Board Member Ernest Tollerson recently spotted this beautiful sturgeon in Maine's Kennebec River. #SturgeonMoon #AtlanticSturgeon #HudsonRiver #EndangeredSpecies #Conservation #ProtectOurWaters #Riverkeeper
