More than 1 billion people around the world are affected by one or more neglected tropical diseases (NTDs). These preventable parasitic and bacterial diseases cause severe disability among the world’s poorest and most vulnerable people. In 2018, RTI committed $3 million to accelerate research and develop innovations to eliminate NTDs, building on decades of experience implementing donor-funded programming around the world. These investments are filling critical knowledge gaps and contributing to the development of new tools and approaches to help communities identify and treat NTDs, including in hard-to-reach populations. Corruption often undermines the sustainability of development results and negatively impacts public trust and service delivery. Our recent study, conducted in partnership with Besa Global, explores how social norms influence corruption and affect governance outcomes. In the Philippines, we examined the role of social norms on infrastructure investments and conservation outcomes at Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park. In a country in Africa, we investigated social norms and expectations affecting corruption investigators. These studies demonstrate how social norms can drive or inhibit corrupt practices, emphasizing the need for locally grounded, evidence-based anti-corruption strategies to improve governance and achieve sustainable development outcomes. In a recent study funded by the The National Institutes of Health Researching COVID to Enhance Recovery (RECOVER) Initiative, researchers analyzed electronic health record data to study the effects of COVID-19 reinfection, finding that the severity of a second COVID-19 case often follows the severity of a first. There was also an increased likelihood that Long Covid would occur after a first infection compared to a reinfection. RTI is proud to contribute to this and other studies aimed to understand, diagnose, and treat Long COVID.
