It's a great honor and responsibility to offer the first major print treatment on a culinary community or culture. But in her debut book, THE SALVISOUL COOKBOOK, the activist and author Karla Tatiana Vasquez does just that, distilling generations of cooking knowledge from El Salvador into a gorgeous volume of recipes and stories. A blend of ethnography, food writing, and community-based journalism, it's not just the first major cookbook on Salvadoran cuisine; it is an invitation to the next hundred cookbooks on El Salvador, and to a much broader appreciation of the passion, craft, and heart of Salvi women everywhere. Print isn't dead. 💀 There were 122 magazine launches in the U.S. in 2022, more than double the number in 2020. And though '23 saw fewer new titles come to market, the momentum continues today thanks to a slate of buzzworthy (re)launches. Entrepreneurs and media mavens are leading the notable comebacks of NME Magazine, Saveur, LIFE and Field & Stream. (Just to name a few!) All of this, and newsstand favorites continue to endure. But the latest buzz about the medium isn't just a moment. It's a movement – for many, away from the exhausting 24/7/365 focus on screens. Reading a magazine can feel like an act of defiance and discovery all at once. A chance to slow down. A tactile escape from ad trackers and trending audio. An opportunity to dive deep into a world of culture, art, fandom, food. To pore over page after page, again and again, each time finding something new.
