Please welcome our latest member company to join our Chicago ecosystem, Silicate! Silicate is a terrestrial enhanced weathering company accelerating a natural geological process – the weathering of minerals – to durably sequester atmospheric carbon dioxide and amend soil pH in farmland. The company has been supported by Breakthrough Energy Fellows, and is trialing its carbon removal solution in the Midwest in collaboration with researchers from Northwestern University. The team's pioneering carbon removal work was featured on CBS Saturday Morning (take a look here: https://lnkd.in/gjH96RFv), and they were recently selected as a finalist in the $80m XPRIZE Carbon Removal competition. We are delighted to introduce Aoife Schmitt as the latest addition to our team, and Olivier Coppieters 't Wallant who is interning for the summer. Aoife was part of the Tufts University team that won the 2024 NCAA national rowing championship 🙌, and is now heading up our carbon dioxide removal work in the Midwest! Hailing from New York City, Aoife has traded the hustle and bustle of NYC for the serene plains of Illinois… talk about a change of scenery! 🌽 🚜 With Aoife's background in air pollution research and fieldwork, and Olivier's studies in environmental science, the pair are just as at home in the field as they are in Northwestern University's clean lab. The samples they collect from our field trials are analysed in the lab so that we can understand the carbon removal potential of enhanced weathering in the Midwest. We are delighted to announce that Zurich Insurance has signed a multi-year agreement with Silicate to permanently remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere through enhanced weathering. This contract marks another important step in our journey to enhance a natural carbon sink, mineral weathering, to durably remove excess CO₂ from the atmosphere. We are grateful for supporters like Zurich Insurance for including this promising carbon dioxide removal solution in their climate strategy to achieve net-zero operational emissions by 2030.
