Snohomish County PUD began operating as an electric utility on September 1, 1949, providing public power to Snohomish County and Camano Island. (We actually began as a water utility on January 17, 1946, but we don’t provide water service to the entire county.) Snohomish County PUD is a municipal corporation of the state of Washington, formed by a majority vote of the people for the purpose of providing electric and/or water utility service. There are 27 other PUDs in Washington, but we are the largest. We are the 12th largest public utility in the U.S. and the second largest in Washington state, serving the 875,000 citizens of Snohomish County and Camano Island and the businesses that keep them thriving. The PUD’s service area consists of 2,200 square miles, including all of Snohomish County and Camano Island. The utility maintains more than 6,300 miles of distribution line.

Hydro Powers our sense of adventure! More EVs are registered in Snohomish County than ever before. With clean energy resources making up the majority of our power supply, you can charge up for your next trip again and again and again and again... All thanks to renewable energy! 🌊 #HydroDay #HydroPowers #HydroFlowsHere
The Pacific Northwest (PNW) relies on hydropower. Hydropower accounts for 28.7% of the United States’ #renewable electricity generation. In Oregon, Washington, and Idaho, #hydropower makes up 42% (Oregon), 60% (Washington), and 43% (Idaho) of renewable electricity generated! In recognition of all the ways hydropower serves Idaho, Governor Brad Little formally recognized August 24th as Idaho’s “Hydropower Day!” With this abundance of hydro, the PNW has been able to depend on hydropower's ability to protect the grid during challenging ice and heat events. Whether it's the Snake River dams in Idaho and Washington, or the federal projects on the Columbia River, hydropower is helping keep the power on across the PNW. Beyond traditional hydropower, the PNW is home to water power of all kinds. From in-pipe conduit hydropower tested in the streets of Portland, Oregon, to the coast, where the PacWave South wave energy test site is being developed, to the turbines tapping into irrigation canals across Washington and Oregon, the power of water is everywhere. As NHA prepares to head to Portland, Oregon, for Clean Currents from October 7-10, the technical tours, which explore some of the vast water power landscape of the Pacific Northwest, will reveal how hydro powers life from Seattle, Washington, to Stateline, Idaho, and everywhere in-between. #HydroDay #HydroPowers
