Our new home is taking shape! This morning, Square One's Kris Allard welcomed Alex Balise of Balise Motor Sales for a visit to the construction site that will soon be home to four classrooms of preschoolers, our family services team, and our administrative staff! It was so exciting to visit with the construction team from One Development and share their progress with Balise, who has donated $1 million to this important community project! Thank you to Alex and the entire Balise Auto team for being such amazing community partners to Square One!

Square One, formerly the Springfield Day Nursery, has been providing early education and child care support to working families in Western Massachusetts for more than 132 years. Today, we provide a wide range of services to children and families, but we remain grounded in our commitment to providing affordable, learning focused child care for infants, toddlers and preschoolers in a safe, stable and secure environment. We are guided by research showing that children who begin learning early become better learners for life. Kids who get off to a good start are better equipped to become successful and happy as adults. They become more productive and more likely to make a positive contribution to their community. Moreover, they become better equipped to provide expanded opportunities to their own children. At Square One, our role is to help build the foundations for both better lives and a better community. Founded in 1883 to provide care for children of working parents, we have evolved and expanded over the years. Our programs include both center and home based childcare as well as Parenting Works, a program that provides parent education, support and training through groups, home visitation and case management. Programs at our centers vary depending on the age and development of enrolled children, but always focus on providing opportunities for children to grow strong cognitively, emotionally, socially and physically.

MassDevelopment has issued a $6 million tax-exempt bond on behalf of Square One (Springfield Day Nursery), to help the organization buy a 1.53-acre parcel at 947 Main St. in Springfield where it will build a 26,000-square-foot early-education center. The new building will be situated at the site of the organization’s former long-time location that was destroyed by a tornado in 2011. It will feature four early learning classrooms – including one room for 24-hour care – workforce development programming for families, early childhood mental health services, family support programs, and administrative offices. Construction began in June 2024 and is expected to be completed in spring 2025. The tax-exempt bond, purchased by PB Partners, Inc., an affiliate of PeoplesBank, helped Square One achieve a lower cost of capital. The project is also being supported by funding from new market tax credits, state and city grant awards, and a capital campaign. bit.ly/4dUcyCf

Another wonderful day for our Square One School-Age Summer Program! Yesterday, we welcomed an amazing team from MGM Springfield for a Bubble and Book Party. Our children were treated to a fantastic story about bubbles and headed outside for various bubble-related activities. At the end of the Bubble Party, every child received a book to take home, thanks to the generous support of our friends at Link to Libraries Inc.. Thank you MGM Springfield and Link to Libraries Inc, Inc. for supporting our Square One children and families!
