A new study from GFI and WBCSD – World Business Council for Sustainable Development reveals that shifting the U.S. protein supply from animal-based foods to alternative proteins would enable a significant amount of land to be repurposed for habitat restoration and conservation as well as agroecological and regenerative farming/ranching. 🦔 Diversifying our protein supply would facilitate the restoration of cropland in approximately 138 of the 216 US ecosystems currently under threat. 🏞️ Alternative proteins create opportunities to maximize carbon sequestration through restoration of forests and lands along water bodies. 🌱 Alternative proteins can enable nature-based solutions (NbS) by improving land-use efficiency. Industrial animal agriculture creates the perfect conditions for zoonotic disease spillover. It also contributes to antibiotic overuse, which is increasingly leading to dangerous antibiotic resistant infections. H5N1, aka Avian flu, has been in the headlines lately as cases emerge in humans who work with farm animals. But this is just one of the many public health risks associated with today's methods of meat, egg, and dairy production. GFI senior lead cultivated meat and seafood scientist Claire Bomkamp, PhD, contributed to a recent review paper published in the Journal of Biological Engineering outlining how, with sufficient government investment, cultivated seafood can address growing global demand for seafood while minimizing the climate and biodiversity impacts of seafood consumption. This review addresses the biomaterials, production processes, tissue engineering approaches, processing, quality, safety, regulatory, and social aspects of cell-cultivated seafood, encompassing where we are today, as well as the road ahead. The cultivated meat industry needs to overcome a number of challenges in the coming years to meet its scaling and production goals. GFI's director of scitech Matt Hotze spoke to Food Navigator during the Future Food-Tech Alternative Proteins conference about a few ways to address these challenges, including shifting to food-grade bioreactors, leveraging AI, and expanding public-private partnerships. Public funding and government support are crucial to leveling the playing field between alternative proteins and conventional animal products, says GFI's Jessica Almy in this Vox piece by Kenny Torrella 👉 https://bit.ly/3M97Y7j In 2022, Congress approved around $5 million annually (representing 0.1% of the USDA's $5 billion annual R&D budget) for the USDA to conduct in-house alternative protein research. While a positive start to getting alt proteins on the agenda of policymakers, much more support and investment is needed to accelerate the alt protein industry at the scale and pace required. "For the same reason that governments give billions of dollars annually to renewable energy and global health research, governments should be investing in better, safer, more efficient ways of producing protein," writes Torrella.
