    Environmental Educator | Outdoor Adventurer

Last Friday I completed my term with Appalachian Conservation Corps as one of their Education & Interpretation Individual Placements in Shenandoah National Park. Returning to the Blue Ridge Mountains this past 6 months has felt like a full-circle moment. In this role, I have been able to have conversations about the rich biodiversity of the region I call home while building my skills of educating about and interpretating the natural world. One of my most treasured take-aways from my time is my relationships with my fellow young land stewards and educators. I am inspired and empowered everyday by sharing an office space or the great outdoors with all of you wonderful folks! A special thank you to Margo Roseum for serving as my supervisor throughout my term. Whether she’s fighting literal or figurative fires, Margo always had time to counsel and coach me. Additional thank you to the following organizations for supporting this internship opportunity! • Let's give a warm welcome to this month's Artist-in-Residence, Susan Patrice! Susan is a documentary and contemplative photographer. Her photography and public installations focus on the Appalachian landscape and its people and feature intimate images that touch deeply into questions of place and belonging. Since 2016, her work has primarily explored the nature of visual perception and its impact on our feelings of kinship with the natural world. She engages in intimate gestural conversations with the land through the use of hand-built cameras designed in response to place. She lives in Marshall, North Carolina, where she is the director of Makers Circle and a co-founder of the Kinship Photography Collective. “During my residency, I will experiment with ways that photography can bear witness to the massive scales of time and space in which the Appalachian region has evolved while also attending to the ever-changing landscape and what it can tell us about transformation and resiliency,” she said. Susan will lead a "Wonder Walk" workshop on September 27th as part of Art in the Park weekend! #artinthepark #photography #art #shenandoahnationalpark

  • 60 years ago today, the Wilderness Act was signed into law, forever protecting designated wilderness areas from human-caused environmental degradation. The wilderness offers exceptional unconfined recreation opportunities and the chance to experience natural quiet, solitude, dark night skies, and nature untrammeled. Shenandoah National Park contains 79,579 acres of congressionally designated wilderness, nearly 40% of the park's acreage. This makes the Shenandoah Wilderness the third largest wilderness area east of the Mississippi River and one of the closest wilderness areas to a major population center. Happy 60th birthday, Wilderness Act! 🎉 "A wilderness, in contrast with those areas where man and his own works dominate the landscape, is hereby recognized as an area where the earth and its community of life are untrammeled by man, where man himself is a visitor who does not remain." – Howard Zahniser, the Wilderness Act of 1964 #wilderness #nature #conservation #shenandoahnationalpark

  • In honor of her first day of class back at Georgetown University, we're giving Abbey Murray, our summer intern, a shoutout! Abbey spent the last three months helping our Annual Giving Team coordinate volunteer efforts and assisting with events in and around Shenandoah. Here's what she had to say about her time with us: "Through participating in team meetings, coordinating Tabling in the Park, and attending community events like the Shenandoah Soirée and Plein Air Paint Day as SNPT's Volunteer Coordinator Intern, I gained an invaluable understanding of the operations and initiatives of a non-profit philanthropic organization. I now have a deeper appreciation for the sustained beauty of Shenandoah National Park." Best wishes for your sophomore year, Abbey! #FDOC #intern #shenandoahnationalpark

  • Ray Mishler is a nearly 50-year resident of Charlottesville and retired in 2020 from his position as the Vice President of the MARTHA JEFFERSON HOSPITAL FOUNDATION where he had served for 31 years. He was responsible in that capacity for community relations and philanthropy, and he assisted the Hospital with the management of its volunteer program, community health partnerships and outreach services, and governmental relations.  He was a Certified Fund-Raising Executive with the Association for Healthcare Philanthropy and Association for Fundraising Professionals (AFP). Before joining the team at Martha Jefferson, Ray served as Director for Development at UVA Children's Hospital and as Executive Director of the Central Virginia Chapter of the American Red Cross.  He currently serves on the board of the Charlottesville Area Community Foundation and the Piedmont Virginia Community College Educational Foundation and was previously on the Boards of the Charlottesville Free Clinic the Thomas Jefferson Area United Way, and other community advisory boards and task forces.  He graduated from Windham College in Putney, Vermont.  He is married to Patricia Smith and they have two grown children. After retiring in 2020 and a Covid hiatus, Ray was aware of the Trust primarily through Banff and offered some volunteer time to work in the office, getting to know the team and learning from other volunteers about their passion for the park. Ray has traveled to many other national parks but felt he had missed that which was in his own backyard. His relationship with the Trust has become a motivator to explore and develop his own personal connection, and he hopes to bring his professional work and other board experiences to support the Trust’s mission. #board #nonprofit #shenandoahnationalpark

"I had this vision of working in the environmental field in my summers during college. But I was honestly a little afraid of actually doing it. Now I feel like I actually have like a foot in the door. Like, look… I did it and now I can keep working in conservation at least every summer for now. And then I'll see where I am after four years of college!" - Trailblazers Member Nava Khurgel We are thrilled to see the next generation of conservationists in action with the Trailblazers program in Charlottesville, VA! This youth program, in partnership with Shenandoah National Park Trust, Rivanna Trails Foundation, Charlottesville Area Mountain Bike Club, and Community Attention Youth Internship Program (CAYIP), has put together a youth crew to work on local trails in the area. After 5 weeks of trail work the crew members will then have a immersive three-day program at Shenandoah National Park. The hope being, this summer program will be a foot in the door into the corps model and potential future careers in land management/outdoors!
