In my experience working in an organisation, I never saw myself through the lens of gender. I’ve always viewed myself as an individual, focusing on my skills, attitude, and the quality of my work. When colleagues progressed in their careers, I attributed their success to similar factors—believing that merit and dedication were the driving forces behind their (all) professional growth. This perspective, however, was challenged when I began to look at the data, such as the findings from the latest #HiddenTruth report by WBDirectors that highlights board diversity in UK companies. Despite the belief that talent and hard work should be enough, the statistics reveal a different story: that 13% of top roles in UK listed companies are held by women. This stark reality was surprising, highlighting that systemic barriers still exist, even if they were invisible to me in my personal journey at the start of my career. Would you believe, it was not until this year, 2024, that the Olympics had an equal representation of female and male athletes — something that should be so natural, yet was not a norm. This realisation truly underscores the importance of continuing to have Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DE&I) discussions in the workplace. This is also why it is so important for me to speak at the upcoming #TurningDEIBWordsIntoAction conference in Gibraltar. After all, DE&I is not just about statistics. It is about changing the norms and ensuring that everyone has an equal opportunity to succeed. Who will join me in Gibraltar?
