As a top-tier academic medical center, UNC Children's upholds a four-tiered mission to "CARE," aligning clinical care, advocacy, research, and education to deliver world-class family-centered care—always regardless of a family's ability to pay. If and when you need us, we're at the ready. Our nearly 200 physicians are clinical and research faculty of the UNC School of Medicine, their medical expertise spanning nearly 50 programs in the School of Medicine's 20 clinical departments, including 14 divisions in the UNC Department of Pediatrics. They are joined by more than 1,800 clinical and ancillary staff, all dedicated to providing exemplary, compassionate care to the thousands of children we treat each year. UNC Children's clinical home, N.C. Children's Hospital, is a major referral center for children with complex conditions and consistently recognized by U.S. News & World Report as one of "America's Best Children's Hospitals" on its annual list. N.C. Children’s Hospital has 150 inpatient beds and a comprehensive children's outpatient center located in the same building, enabling your child to see multiple specialists in a single visit. Our physicians work hand-in-hand with community hospitals and pediatricians all across the state, providing specialty care to more than 70,000 children from all 100 counties in North Carolina each year. And because many of our patients have conditions that cause frequent or long-term hospital stays, we know just how important it is for a kid to "just be a kid," especially when they're not feeling their best. That's why we offer so many child-friendly amenities and offer private patient rooms equipped to serve as a “home away from home” for children and families when they need it most.

Tyrone Miller, now 17, had a kidney transplant at UNC Health when he was just 3 years old. Dr. Keisha Gibson and post-transplant coordinator Lynn McCoy have been a part of his care team ever since he was a toddler. McCoy says one of the best parts of her job as a post-transplant coordinator is getting to know her patients and their families and watch them grow. “Tyrone has really grown a lot—especially his level of maturity,” McCoy says. “Frannie, his mom, was recently pretty sick, and Tyrone really stepped up to care for her without being asked. He used his experience as a patient to give back to the person who’s cared for him his whole life.” McCoy says it’s important for everyone, especially those in minority communities, to consider becoming an organ donor. “We have to continue the work to raise awareness that you can donate a kidney and still be happy and healthy—and change someone’s life forever,” McCoy says. UNC Health's new surgical hospital will help meet the growing demand for care in North Carolina. “It's been really heartbreaking for teammates here, and really hard for patients across North Carolina when they need to get transferred in, or they need to come here for care, and we can't provide that care,” says Dr. Caprice Greenberg. “This new hospital is going to make sure that we have the operating rooms and the ICUs available when people need us.”
