United Way of Gordon County

When people think about the United Way of Gordon County, they think about the Unity Run. Individuals of all ages love this event, and it is one of, if not the largest, fundraising event in our community. The first race in 1995 had over 1,000 participants, and last year’s had more than 1,800 registered walkers and runners. With the thousands of individuals who have participated over the years, there’s one individual who loved this race more than anyone else. Betty Fuquea Butler loved the Unity Run and participated in more than twenty Unity Runs, winning medals for her age division year after year. She was an avid walker who walked ten miles a day, six days a week. Betty won her last Unity Run in 2022 and never stopped moving. Betty passed away earlier this year at the age of 85. Because of her passion, love of walking, and dedication to this community, her memory will be honored as we dedicate the Unity Run to her memory. This year’s race and future races will be known as the Betty Butler Memorial Unity Run. We look forward to celebrating Betty and the good works our Partner Agencies do year-round to help make Gordon County a wonderful place to live and work. Together, we are opening pathways for every person in Gordon County to thrive. Through partnerships with our Partner Agencies and Community Partners, United Way of Gordon County's United4Gordon Partnership offers monthly training sessions in a lunch-and-learn format. Inaugural Unity Awards 2024 Volunteer of the Year-Penny Miller Advocates for Children nominated Penny Miller as their Volunteer of the Year for 2024. Here is what they had to say about Mrs. Miller's dedication to their program. CASA would not exist as a program without volunteers. Every day in Gordon County, we have a group of selfless individuals giving their time and energy to the most vulnerable children in our community. This year, we want to highlight volunteer Penny Miller. Throughout her almost 10 of service, Penny has boldly and confidently advocated for 17 children. In 2023, Penny dedicated over 154 hours of her time and drove 765 miles to court hearings, home visits, and anywhere else a child needed her to be. Penny is currently advocating for 5 children in 4 separate cases. Penny has never shied away from taking the tough cases. While we can serve any child in foster care, some volunteers choose not to take on certain cases based on the secondhand trauma that can come along with the stories we intertwine with. Penny fearlessly dives into some of the most heartbreaking stories & is an ever-present support for the children she serves throughout their case and beyond. In many cases, people surrounding the children change foster families, case managers, service providers, & schools. Penny remains firm. Once she takes on a case, she is dedicated to sticking it out & making sure the children know that she is there for them & only for them. Penny will work tirelessly to make sure that even the smallest gap is filled. Local foster families, court staff, providers, & DFCS staff all enjoy working with Penny. The Special Assistant Attorney General serving Gordon County said, “I know she is always fiercely advocating for the rights of the children and parents in our community, and I’ll only ever have kind words for Penny Miller.” Advocates for Children, including CASA of Northwest Georgia, are thankful for the commitment and selfless dedication Penny has shown through her many years of service.
