At Humana I had the privilege of working with some very smart people on some very gnarly problems. At Uno Health I've had the opportunity to do the same, doubling down on improving the lives of low-income seniors using technology. One exciting through-line of my journey has been answering the question: how do you advocate for the member? My opinion: first, make it make “cents.” One version of that means quantifying the importance of retention, which in healthcare is harder than it looks. That’s why at Uno we’ve built this nifty tool (bit.ly/UnoRetention) for Medicare execs and their CFOs to answer the question, what does retention do to your P&L? My personal bonus has been getting to collaborate again with an old Humana colleague and now friend/ CFO-extraordinaire at Clover Health, Clay Thornton – who provided instrumental guidance and input on this analysis. 📈 Model: bit.ly/UnoRetention You can enjoy the answer through this fun set of “five guiding principles” and the very surprising punchline: “1% of net retention is 8x more profitable than 1% of growth.”

So much of what we do at Uno Health is about leveling the playing field for seniors with respect to healthcare affordability, and ultimately outcomes. To best deliver for our Medicare plans partners and their members, we not only need to build great technology, but also quickly adapt to the (fast!) evolving landscape of healthcare regulations in the US. To that end, I recently had an opportunity to sit down with Lindsay Knable at Oliver Wyman for an important conversation around recent changes in the Health Equity Index (HEI) at CMS - a policy change that reflects CMS's continued focus on ensuring lower-income seniors are prioritized and get the care they need. To succeed on this measure, plans likely need a robust strategy that includes: 1. Analysis to identify members eligible but not enrolled in HEI qualifying programs (Medicaid, Medicare Savings Program and LIS) 2. Scalable outreach and comprehensive enrollment solutions into all income-based programs, such as SNAP, Utility assistance and Prescription assistance, which ensure the qualifying HEI population performs well on other stars measure. 3. The ability to embed eligibility and enrollment tools within the hands of teams already touching members every day (All of which we've been focused on at Uno Health long before the HEI measure arrived!) Every day at Uno Health we get to see our technology impact the lives of seniors, but not every day does that impact get published! So proud to see Uno Health featured in this recent Nature piece outlining the opportunity for digital technology companies to radically accelerate Awareness, Access and Affordability (the three “As”!) for the most vulnerable populations. “Partnerships with [organizations such as Uno] will enable CMS to communicate with individuals about their benefits eligibility, reduce fluctuating health insurance churn, and improve the utilization of health benefits.” Whether it’s $20 for a prescription copay, $200 a month for healthy groceries, or $2,000 in annual premium assistance, we’ve proven how tech-enabled human-centered experiences can not only radically transform the way Medicare members engage with their Medicare health plan, but their lives overall.
