Helping to improve health equity for everyone is a key part of what drives us. That includes looking at how improving business models may affect patients. A new study by Humana Healthcare Research showed that value-based payment models—where the cost of care is based on things like health outcomes and patient satisfaction—were associated with less race disparity in emergency department visits for Black patients who received primary care from a value-based doctor. While more research is needed to determine exactly how this type of care contributes to the differences, the findings may suggest a path to more equitable care for everyone. When Steve McDonald joined Humana, he brought 32 years of experience as a law enforcement officer to the Executive Protection and Investigations team.
