A thoughtful piece by our founder Jeffrey Wessler highlighting one of Heartbeat Health’s key pushes - to rigorously study what we do, from day 1 🔥
I wrote this piece about what the Digital Health can learn from Big Pharma. No matter what your viewpoint on the pharmaceutical industry, one thing is true — it does world-class and world-changing science. And it does it in a systematic, rigorous, repeatable process. Digital health has made so much progress, but until we bring this same level or rigor, we’ll land shy of their scale and impact. https://lnkd.in/ekYedXKE

It is such a crazy time to be building a digital health company -- on the one hand, there is SO much excitement about the space, so many opportunities for technology to make improvements, and so many exceptional people jumping in heads first. And yet, the market is pretty dismal for funding, exits and outcomes. In my view, survival is key right now -- and may be one of the best ways to make it through this storm. Take a look at my thought in Forbes on how to survive the great digital health shake out: #healthcare #digitalhealth #healthtech https://lnkd.in/e5V6yN-W

Asking for help can be hard, but it's a crucial part of business success. Four years ago, my boss Jeff at Heartbeat Health sat me down when I was overwhelmed by my workload and said, "Sometimes you need to ask for help." That really hit home for me. Since becoming self-employed five months ago, I've been doing everything myself. But recently, I realized I don't have to do it all alone. People actually like to help. When asked to write a wellness column for a local magazine SOMA Living, I initially said, "I have no marketing budget." But Michael understood my situation as a new business owner and offered to let me write a column. It was that easy. Today, I'm celebrating my column being in the hands of almost 15,000 households! This Valentine's Day, I encourage you to reflect on how you can show yourself the love, respect, and support you deserve. What help have you appreciated in your career, or what support will you ask for this month? Even the smallest request is a step in the right direction. I'd love to hear your thoughts on the article and how it helps you take the next step on wellness journey. Happy Valentine's Day! #wellness #wellatwork #careersupport #careermilestones

I appreciated Tim Fitzpatrick's list of kidney care investments, including some of our great portfolio companies; however, I love that investing for our kidney care patients means not only caring for their kidney, but also caring for our patients' full health. That's why I love how Wellth helps patients get healthier with daily habit formation, Heartbeat Health helps patients get better cardiology care, SameSky Health creates culturally tailored patient engagement, and VyncaCare provides supportive care services for seriously ill patients. Excited to track how the space continues to evolve for such chronically ill and underserved patients!
Who, what, when and why do ideas get funded? Today we take a closer look at 11 of the most active investors in kidney care from idea to IPO— welcome to Kidney Capital. 🏙💰 https://lnkd.in/eNwEnehS What's in the table: • 𝐖𝐡𝐨 & 𝐖𝐡𝐞𝐧: The left-most columns in this table contain 11 of the most active investors in kidney care across the company lifecycle. This group broadly represents four investor types from idea to IPO: (a) accelerators; (b) early stage venture capital; (c) growth equity; and (d) strategic capital. • 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭: There are 4 segments (colors) highlighted in this table: Care delivery (yellow), devices (purple), diagnostics (blue), and other (green). For what it’s worth, I track 9 segments across the Kidneyverse (link in comments). • 𝐖𝐡𝐲: Investments happen because founders and investors share a unique point of view about what the future looks like. It’s as much about timing (why now?) as it is about fit (why you?). First, I’ve separated investments (solid border lines) from mergers & acquisitions (dotted lines). Second, I’ve included a crown (“👑”) for companies with an exit, either through M&A or IPO. Insights: 1. CVS wants to deliver care to the 85% of Americans who live within 5 miles of a CVS pharmacy. Beyond direct acquisitions (Oak Street Health, Signify Health), CVS launched their $100 million corporate venture fund in 2021 and have made a series of bets across the tech-enabled care landscape, with exciting implications for kidney care. Examples: Strive Health, Monogram Health, Carbon Health, Waymark -- 2. Y Combinator’s healthcare and bio bets are accelerating under Subhi Sarna’s leadership YC has been making healthcare bets since Sam Altman first took over for Paul Graham in 2014. That year, YC welcomed Ginkgo Bioworks, Inc. to its summer batch— a company that went public in 2021 and did $160 million in revenues last year. In 2017, YC welcomed its first therapeutics company. In 2021, 50 healthcare companies joined, including 20 therapeutics and 10 medical device & diagnostics startups. YC’s most recent cohort (Winter 2023) included over 270 companies, with about 7% (20) operating in healthcare. Examples: VenoStent, Inc., Starling (YC W22), Nephrogen, Trestle Biotherapeutics, Volumetric -- Continue reading the post here: 💰 https://lnkd.in/eNwEnehS Investors: CVS Health Ventures Fresenius Medical Care North America DaVita Kidney Care KidneyX Baxter International Inc. Building a startup is Hard. Here are four hard-earned technology lessons I wish I had known when starting Heartbeat Health. I wrote about them in the article below and hope they can be useful for you: 1. Your business isn’t your technology; it’s the value you deliver to customers. 2. High-tech can be high-touch. 3. The best technology is often invisible. 4. You don't have to build it all yourself (and probably shouldn't.) https://lnkd.in/e3qVCXzp #forbescouncil #healthcare #startup #tech #lessonslearnt
