The Department of Defense (DoD) activated U.S. Special Operations Command (USSOCOM) April 16, 1987, at MacDill Air Force Base, Florida. DoD created the new unified command in response to congressional action in the Goldwater-Nichols Defense Reorganization Act of 1986 and the Nunn-Cohen Amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act of 1987. Congress mandated a new four-star command be activated to prepare Special Operations Forces (SOF) to carry out assigned missions and, if directed by the president or secretary of defense (SECDEF), to plan for and conduct special operations.

CDR Brennan Cox and the team at USSOCOM Science and Technology led development and execution of Innovation Foundry 16: Contested Logistics in Future SOF Operations. This 3-day design thinking event assembled 80 subject matter experts from industry, academia, and government to propose novel capability concepts for resourcing power, parts, and supplies at the point of need for the untethered SOF operator. Innovation Foundry events allow us to turn warfighter needs into future capability, working with the people who make the tech, “S&T has developed and refined a unique process, the Innovation Cycle, to engage technology pioneers and leaders, and to discover and develop high risk, innovative, and disruptive technologies for future on-boarding. The Innovation Foundry is the first event in the Innovation Cycle and is the idea generation phase.” Want to learn more about Innovation Foundry events and how to participate?
