The Department of Defense (DoD) activated U.S. Special Operations Command (USSOCOM) April 16, 1987, at MacDill Air Force Base, Florida. DoD created the new unified command in response to congressional action in the Goldwater-Nichols Defense Reorganization Act of 1986 and the Nunn-Cohen Amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act of 1987. Congress mandated a new four-star command be activated to prepare Special Operations Forces (SOF) to carry out assigned missions and, if directed by the president or secretary of defense (SECDEF), to plan for and conduct special operations.

🇺🇸 Congratulations US Army Master Sgt. Ivan Morera from #TeamSOCOM on your selection as Invictus Team U.S. co-captain for Invictus Games Vancouver Whistler 2025! Morera exemplifies the courage and tenacity of USSOCOM as an active-duty #GreenBeret. Within 18 months of his injury, he completed his first basic static line airborne operation, followed by his first military freefall operation in 2018. Today, he stands as the only upper body amputee on MFF status and the only one-handed medic in the U.S. Armed Forces. His leadership extends beyond his own recovery, as he has been instrumental in guiding and supporting his fellow wounded, injured or ill service members and their families with SOCOM's Warrior Care Program - Care Coalition. Selection as co-captain for Team U.S. is a recognition of his contributions and commitment to the principles of resilience and recovery, which are at the heart of the #InvictusGames. #Unconquered #People #AdaptiveSports News release in comments.

The U.S. Embassy in Benin and Special Operations Command Africa co-hosted the Women in Security - Africa Conference in Cotonou, Benin, Sept. 3-4. “With this resolution, the UN security council acknowledged the unique and disproportionate impact of armed conflict on women and stressed the importance of women's involvement in the prevention and resolution of armed conflict,” said U.S. Ambassador to Benin Brian Shukan. This milestone event focused on enhancing the role of #WomenPeaceSecurity efforts throughout West Africa. “The language of the resolution itself was informed by the regional and international experiences of women," said #SOCAF Deputy Chief of Staff Faye Cuevas. "Next year, what began in Africa, the world will celebrate when we observe the resolution's 25th anniversary.” Leaders spoke on the history of Women, Peace and Security as a vital global agenda. WPS was established by the adoption of the United Nations Security Council Resolution 1325 in 2000. Full story link in comments.

Help us take time to recognize the great support we receive from Special Operations Detachment Korea (SOD-K) in our training and readiness. Assigned to the Colorado Army National Guard, SOD-K brings a special set skills tailored toward the USSOCOM core activity of countering weapons of mass destruction. The training and relationship building that SOD-K invested over the past decades was visibly recognized during Ulchi Freedom Shield 2024 when two personnel were awarded the Korea Defense Service Medal for more than 60 nonconsecutive days served in the Korean area of operations. “Continue to remember the ones no longer with us. The innocents in New York, Washington D.C., and Pennsylvania,” said Air Force Lt. Gen. Sean Farrell, deputy commander of USSOCOM. U.S. Special Operations Command held its 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony at the Special Operations Memorial on MacDill Air Force Base, Florida, Sept. 11 with base military leaders, first responders, and community leaders to commemorate the 2,977 killed during the terrorist attacks. “The threat of terrorism remains persistent.
